Ohio Wesleyan 18, Albion 6
Ohio Wesleyan 7, Albion 5

March 7, 2005

Junior third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Albion in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader on Monday in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Bishops had taken the first game, erupting for 6 runs in both the first and second innings.

With one out in the top of the eighth of the nightcap, freshman outfielder Wes Desmond (
Frisco, Texas/MacArthur) singled and moved to third on a hit-and-run single by senior catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton). Hall followed with a single down the leftfield line, scoring Desmond and sending Strasburg to third. Hall then took off for second base, and Strasburg scored when Albion pitcher Mark Wojda threw wildly to second.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by junior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland), but Albion picked up 3 unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. The Britons added a run in the third on Dave Seales' RBI single to take a 4-1 lead.

Sophomore second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) and junior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) slammed back-to-back doubles to open the fourth and bring the Bishops within 4-2, and Williams scored on a ground out by sophomore first baseman Tom Bottichio (
Mason).

The Bishops took the lead in the sixth when Toney led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Desmond. Desmond then stole second and scored on a throwing error by Albion third baseman Chris Terry, giving the Bishops a 5-4 lead.

Terry redeemed himself in the bottom of the inning, however, lining a double down the rightfield line to score Bryan Smith and tie the game at 5-5.

Williams had 3 hits to lead the Bishop offense, while Toney, Desmond and Hall had 2 hits apiece.

Sophomore righthander Sean Ring (
Hilliard/Davidson) pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first collegiate win. Junior lefthander Josh Nice (Hinckley/Highland) started and pitched the first 2.2 innings, while freshman righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) allowed 1 run in 2.2 innings.

Wojda was the loser in relief for Albion.

In the opener, the Britons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on back-to-back doubles by Nate Hawley and Chris Trott.

Ohio Wesleyan then jumped on Albion starter Pat Cavanagh, scoring 6 runs before Cavanagh recorded an out. Sherman led off with a triple and Williams tied the game at 1-1 with a single. Toney walked and Bottichio followed with a single to score Williams. Desmond then lined a 2-run double and Strasburg blasted a 2-run homer to complete the first-inning uprising.

In the second, the Bishops added 6 more runs, highlighted by Toney's 2-run single and an RBI single by Desmond.

Strasburg had a 2-run triple in the third, Sherman hit a solo homer in the fourth and freshman outfielder Josh Wheeler (
Columbus/Dublin Scioto) had an RBI single to highlight Ohio Wesleyan's 3-run sixth.

Desmond went 4-for-4 with 3 RBI and Strasburg was 3-for-3 with 4 RBI to highlight the Ohio Wesleyan offense. Sherman had 3 hits and scored 3 times and
Williams, Toney and Bottichio each had 2 hits.

Junior righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) pitched the first 5.0 innings to record the win. Sophomore lefthander John Parssinen (
Austin, Texas/Lake Travis) pitched a scoreless sixth and junior righthander Jason Whitcomb (Wauseon) worked a scoreless seventh.

Cavanagh was charged with the loss for Albion
