Ohio Wesleyan 18, Olivet 11

March 8, 2005

Junior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) belted 2 home runs and sophomore second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) drove in the go-ahead run as Ohio Wesleyan topped Olivet on Tuesday in Fort Myers, Fla.

With the Bishops trailing, 6-5, after 3 innings, junior third baseman Sammy Hall (
North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) led off the Ohio Wesleyan fourth with a single. One out later, freshman designated hitter A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) tied the game with a triple to rightfield. Sherman followed with a run-scoring double to plate Dote with the go-ahead run, and after taking third on a wild pitch, scored on a Toney sacrifice fly.

Hall, freshman catcher Eric Stitzlein (Loudonville) and Dote drove in runs during Ohio Wesleyan's 4-run fifth inning that increased the Bishop lead to 12-6, and after Olivet scored once in the bottom of the fifth, senior catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) delivered an RBI double in the sixth.

Olivet closed to within 14-10 with a run in the sixth and 2 more in the seventh, but Ohio Wesleyan put the game out of reach with 3 runs in the top of the eighth, with Strasburg and Dote plating runs to highlight the inning.

Toney had helped the Bishops to an early 5-2 lead with a 2-run homer in the first and a solo shot to lead off the third. Stitzlein and Sherman drove in runs during Ohio Wesleyan's 2-run second frame.

The Comets bounced back with 4 runs in the bottom of the third, with Nick McIntosh and James Melvin each driving in a run and 2 more scoring as the result of Ohio Wesleyan errors.

Toney went 3-for-5 with 4 RBI to highlight the Bishop offense. Stitzlein also went 3-for-5 and drove in 2 runs, while Dote had 3 RBI and Sherman, freshman outfielder Brett Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview), Strasburg and Hall had 2 hits apiece.

Junior righthander Billy Kampmann (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) pitched 5.2 innings in relief, allowing 7 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 5 and walking 1, to pick up his second win of the season. Freshman righthander Justin Grota (San Antonio, Texas/MacArthur) started for Ohio Wesleyan, pitching 2.1 innings, and freshman righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) pitched the final inning.

Brad Dragicevich was the starting and losing pitcher for Olivet
