Ohio Wesleyan 12, Baldwin-Wallace 7

March 10, 2005

Sophomore second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) clubbed a 3-run homer to break a 3-3 tie and put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and junior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) capped an 8-run fourth inning with an inside-the-park homer as Ohio Wesleyan rallied to defeat Baldwin-Wallace on Thursday in Fort Myers, Fla.

Baldwin-Wallace took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a solo homer by Nick Quarando and an RBI double by Mike Farrell. The Yellow Jackets added a run in the second on a walk and a pair of singles. Meanwhile, B-W pitcher Mike Turchan had held the Bishops hitless through the first 3 innings.

That changed abruptly in the top of the fourth.
Toney led off the frame by beating out a single to third base, then moved to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore first baseman Tom Bottichio (Mason) followed with a single through the left side, sending Toney to third, and freshman outfielder Wes Desmond (Frisco, Texas/MacArthur) scored Toney with a sacrifice fly to left.

Senior catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) followed with a single, and back-to-back bad-hop grounders by junior third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) and sophomore first baseman Steve Toneatti (Ramsey, N.J./St. Stephen's Episcopal) scored another run and left the bases loaded. Freshman outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) tied the game with a sacrifice fly before Sherman deposited a ball over the fence in left center for a 6-3 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

Junior shortstop Brandon Williams (
Dublin/Coffman) followed with a walk before Toney drilled a ball into the gap in right center and circled the bases for Ohio Wesleyan's first inside-the-park home run since April 7, 1999, when Jay Hebert hit one against John Carroll.

Turchan hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to bring Baldwin-Wallace within 8-5, but the Bishops got those runs back in the top of the fifth when Desmond tripled and scored on a wild pitch and Strasburg followed with a solo homer.

Williams increased the Bishop lead to 12-5 with a long 2-run homer to centerfield in the seventh, and the Yellow Jackets scratched out a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to wrap up the day's scoring.

Toney, Strasburg and Hall had 3 hits apiece to lead the Ohio Wesleyan offense. Sherman had 2 hits and drove in 3 runs and Williams and Toney drove in 2 runs apiece.

Junior righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) pitched the first 5-plus innings, allowing 5 runs, to pick up his first win of the season. Sophomore righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) worked the final 4.0 innings to record his first collegiate save.

Turchan was the starting and losing pitcher for Baldwin-Wallace
. He allowed 10 runs during the first 4-plus innings.
