Ohio
Wesleyan 14, Haverford 10
March
11, 2005
Freshman
outfielder A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) cracked a pinch-hit
home run to break an 8-8 tie and put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and
freshman second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) singled in 2
runs during a 4-run ninth inning that provided some insurance as the Bishops
topped Haverford in non-conference play on Friday in Cape Coral, Fla.
Sophomore second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) staked
the Bishops to a quick 1-0 advantage by leading off the game with a homer
to leftfield.
The Bishop lead jumped to 5-0 in the fourth when junior third baseman
Sammy Hall (North
Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy)
blasted a grand slam, the Bishops' first since May 7, 2002.
The Fords closed to within 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Ryan Stephens
connected on a 2-run shot, but Ohio Wesleyan got those runs back in the
top of the fifth on a 2-run blast by senior
catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton).
Haverford
rallied in the bottom of the fifth, with Stephens' 2-run double highlighting
a 3-run inning that brought the Fords to within 7-5.
Hall increased the Bishop lead to 8-5 with a solo shot in the seventh,
but Haverford tied the game with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning, with
Crispin Vary's 2-out, 2-run single the key hit.
Dote then led off the top of the eighth with a pinch-hit blast to rightfield,
knocking Ford starter Nick Chanock out of the game. The Bishops added
a run later in the inning on an RBI single by freshman outfielder Wes
Desmond (Frisco,
Texas/MacArthur).
Ohio Wesleyan added 4 runs in the top of the ninth, with one run scoring
on a wild pitch, junior
shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman)
driving
in another and Johnson's 2-run hit capping the frame and giving the Bishops
a 14-8 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Fords loaded the bases with one out and
scored 2 runs on a Bishop error, but sophomore righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson)
came on to induce a game-ending double-play ball.
Sherman, Williams and Hall had 3 hits apiece to lead the Bishops, with
Hall driving in 5 runs in the game. Strasburg and Ring added 2 hits apiece.
Junior lefthander Josh Nice (Hinckley/Highland) started for Ohio Wesleyan
and pitched 3.0 shutout innings before running into trouble in the fifth.
Junior righthander Billy Kampmann (Blairstown,
N.J./Blair Academy) worked 2.2 innings, allowing 3 runs, and freshman
righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School),
who worked out of a jam in the seventh and pitched a scoreless eighth,
was the winning pitcher in relief.
Chanock was the starting and losing pitcher for Haverford.
He allowed 9 runs during the first 7-plus innings.
