Ohio Wesleyan 10, Bluffton 9

March 12, 2005

Junior third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) belted a 2-run homer to cap a 3-run ninth-inning rally that lifted Ohio Wesleyan over Bluffton in non-conference play on Saturday in Cape Coral, Fla.

With the Bishops trailing, 8-7, going into the top of the ninth inning, junior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) reached base on a Beaver error with one out.
Senior catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) followed with a single and sophomore first baseman Tom Bottichio (Mason) forced Strasburg at second, with Toney scoring when Bluffton shortstop Anthony Bryant threw wide of first base. Hall followed with a drive to leftfield that gave the Bishops a 10-8 lead.

Bluffton rallied in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases on a single by Jimmy McMonagle, a walk to Lowell Wyse and a Hall error on Ryan Fiely's grounder before sophomore righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) induced a pair of grounders to get the Bishops out of the inning.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 6-0 lead in the second, getting hits from the first 6 batters to reach the plate. Hall, freshman outfielder A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) and sophomore first baseman Steve Toneatti (
Ramsey, N.J./St. Stephen's Episcopal) each singled to load the bases. Freshman second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) singled in a run to put the Bishops on the scoreboard and sophomore second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) drove in 2 runs with a double down the leftfield line. Junior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) followed with a base hit up the middle to score 2 runs and Hall added an RBI single later in the inning to give the Bishops a 6-0 lead.

The Beavers closed to within 6-2 in the third, stringing together consecutive hits by Fiely, Jason Moore, Tony Gerig and Kyle White.

Williams increased the Bishop lead to 7-2 with a solo homer down the leftfield line in the fourth, but White and Jeff Hinderschied drove in runs in the fifth to bring Bluffton within 7-4. The Beavers closed to within 7-5 in the seventh when Gerig led off with a single, moved to third on a single by White and scored on Hinderschied's double-play ball.

Bluffton took the lead in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with nobody out on a Toneatti error, a Wyse single and a walk to Fiely. Moore bounced into a force play at the plate for the first out, but Strasburg's throw to first for the double play was high, allowing Wyse to score. After Gerig was hit by a pitch, White doubled home 2 runs to give the Beavers an 8-7 lead.

Williams and Hall each had 3 hits and 3 RBI to lead the Bishops. Toney, Strasburg and Toneatti added 2 hits apiece.

Freshman righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) worked 6-plus innings, allowing 5 runs. Junior righthander Billy Kampmann (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) pitched 1.1 innings and freshman righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) was the winning pitcher in relief.

Fiely was the losing pitcher for Bluffton
