Ohio Wesleyan 8, Mount Union 6

March 19, 2005

[ Matt Strasburg ]Senior catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) belted a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Mount Union in the Bishops' home opener on Saturday at Littick Field.

The Bishops' scheduled game against Rose-Hulman was rained out and will not be rescheduled.

Mount Union led, 6-3, going into the bottom of the ninth. Sophomore outfielder Sean Ring
(Hilliard/Davidson) led off with a pinch-hit single. Sophomore first baseman Steve Toneatti (Ramsey, N.J./St. Stephen's Episcopal) followed with a bouncer to shortstop, forcing Ring, but Toneatti moved to second when Purple Raider second baseman Derek Ball threw wildly in trying to complete a double play.

Sophomore second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) plated Toneatti with a double down the rightfield line before junior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) reached on an error and junior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) walked to load the bases. Strasburg then sent the ball over the fence in leftfield for Ohio Wesleyan's first walk-off homer since May 4, 2002.

The Bishops had taken a 2-0 lead in the second on RBI singles by Williams and Toney, and after Mount Union closed to within 2-1 on Ball's sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth,
Toney plated a run with a ground out to give Ohio Wesleyan a 3-1 lead.

Purple Raider designated hitter Paul Namey hit a 2-run homer in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3, and the Raiders took the lead in the seventh on Chris Liptak's 2-out RBI single. Chris Fadden smacked a 2-run homer in the eighth to increase the Mount Union lead to 6-3.

Toney went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI for Ohio Wesleyan, while Sherman scored 3 times and Toneatti scored twice. Williams also contributed 2 hits.

Junior righthander Billy Kampmann (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) was the winning pitcher in relief, working the final 2.0 innings and allowing 1 hit and 1 run. Junior righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) pitched the first 7-plus inning, allowing 7 hits and striking out 7.

Troy Beros was the losing pitcher for Mount Union
.
