Ohio
Wesleyan 2, Wittenberg 1
Wittenberg 6, Ohio Wesleyan 5
March
24, 2005
Sophomore
second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) drove in the go-ahead
run in the fifth inning to lift the Bishops over Wittenberg in the opener
of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Thursday
at Littick Field.
In the nightcap, Tyler Curlis hit a 2-run homer in the top of the sixth
as the Tigers salvaged a split of the twinbill.
With the score tied, 1-1, in the bottom of the fifth of the opener, freshman
outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview
Park/Fairview) was hit by a pitch with one out. Wilkins advanced to second
on a ground out by sophomore first baseman Steve Toneatti (Ramsey, N.J./St.
Stephen's Episcopal)
and scored on Sherman's double to center.
Wittenberg had taken a 1-0 lead in the second on a one-out double by Brian
Hampp and a 2-out single by Justin McCulla.
Ohio Wesleyan answered in the bottom of the inning when senior
catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) led off with a single, moved
to second on a sacrifice by freshman
outfielder Wes Desmond (Frisco,
Texas/MacArthur)
and scored on a double by junior
third baseman Sammy Hall (North
Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy).
Junior righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) worked the complete game
for Ohio Wesleyan. He allowed 6 hits, struck out 3 and walked one.
Kurt Hartfelder was the starting and losing pitcher for Wittenberg. He
allowed 4 hits, struck out 3 and walked one.
In the nightcap, Ohio Wesleyan led, 5-3, after 5 innings before the Tigers
rallied in the sixth. With 2 out, McCulla doubled and Brad Koopman followed
with a run-scoring double to bring Wittenberg within 5-4. Curlis followed
with a homer to right to give the Tigers the lead.
The Bishops threatened in the bottom of the sixth when Strasburg led off
with a single and Desmond reached when Tiger second baseman Jon Komperda
bobbled the throw at first base on Desmond's sacrifice attempt. Freshman
outfielder Josh Wheeler
(Columbus/Dublin
Scioto) then tried to sacrifice the runners to second and third, but Tiger
pitcher Ryan Goldschmidt forced Strasburg at third for the first out.
Junior
shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman)
then lined into an inning-ending double play.
Ohio Wesleyan threatened again in the seventh. Freshman
outfielder A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) led off with a line
drive that handcuffed Komperda and went into rightfield. Senior outfielder
Brian Gamble (Massillon/Perry)
moved to second on a sacrifice by Toneatti and took third on a ground
out by Williams, but Tiger pitcher Steve Less retired junior outfielder
Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) on an infield bouncer to end the game.
Sherman had given the Bishops a 1-0 lead with a solo shot in the bottom
of the first, and Ohio Wesleyan tacked on 2 more runs in the second, with
Toney's RBI single highlighting the frame.
Wittenberg got on the scoreboard on Hampp's
2-run double in the top of the third, but the Bishops got those 2 runs
back in the bottom of the frame as Wilkins laced an RBI double and Toney
was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Ohio Wesleyan a 5-2 lead.
The Tigers closed to within 5-3 on Curlis' RBI ground out in the fourth.
Junior
righthander Billy Kampmann (Blairstown,
N.J./Blair Academy) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
He worked 5.2 innings, allowing 6 runs.
Curlis picked up the win in relief for Wittenberg, pitching 2.2 innings
of scoreless relief. Goldschmidt pitched a scoreless sixth and Less worked
a scoreless seventh and was credited with a save.
