Wittenberg
7, Ohio Wesleyan 4
Ohio Wesleyan 2, Wittenberg 1
March
26, 2005
Junior
designated hitter Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) drove
in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning to lift the Bishops over Wittenberg
in the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader
on Thursday at Littick Field.
In the opener, Tom Pickering scored the go-ahead run in the fourth and
the Tigers added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth to take a win.
Wittenberg had taken a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the nightcap when
Justin McCulla walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third
on Tyler Curlis' single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jon Fox.
The Bishops came back in the bottom of the fourth as junior
outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) led off with a single and stole
second. One out later, senior
catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) ripped a double down the
leftfield line to tie the game. Strasburg moved to third on a ground out
and scored when Dunn slapped a single through the right side. Freshman
outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview
Park/Fairview) followed with a single but the runners were stranded there.
The Tigers threatened in the seventh when Tyler Christillo was hit by
a pitch with 2 out. Curlis then walked and the runners moved to second
and third on a wild pitch, but junior
righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) retired
Fox on an infield bouncer to end the game.
Sophomore righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) pitched the first
6.2 innings for Ohio Wesleyan, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 3.
Krieger got the last out for his first save of the season.
Steve Less pitched the complete game for Wittenberg, allowing 4 hits in
a losing effort.
In the opener, Wittenberg jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning,
stringing together 2 walks, 2 Bishop errors and a base hit.
Ohio Wesleyan answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore
second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) was hit by a pitch
to open the inning and moved up on a single by junior
shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman).
Toney then beat out a bunt, with Sherman scoring and Williams taking third
when Tiger pitcher Ryan Goldschmidt threw wildly to first base. Toney
then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch, with Williams scoring
on the play. Strasburg then launched a fly ball to deep center that glanced
off the glove of Curlis just in front of the wall, scoring Toney. Freshman
outfielder A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) walked and the runners
moved up on a sacrifice by junior
third baseman Sammy Hall (North
Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy)
before Strasburg scored the tying run on a passed ball.
Pickering walked to lead off the Wittenberg fourth, moved to second on
McCulla's
sacrifice, took third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch.
The Tigers added 2 runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Brian Hampp and
Jon Komperda.
Freshman righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) was
the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan. He allowed 3 hits and
3 earned runs in 4.2 innings. Dunn pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Goldschmidt pitched the complete game for Wittenberg, scattering 6 hits.
