Mount
Vernon Nazarene 7, Ohio Wesleyan 6
March
29, 2005
Nate
Rutkowski scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning to lift
Mount Vernon Nazarene over Ohio Wesleyan in non-conference action on Tuesday
at Littick Field.
Rutkowski led off the ninth with a double to left center, moved to third
on a fly ball by Zack Helm and scored on a wild pitch by junior righthander
Michael Krieger (Boardman).
The Bishops had erased a 6-2 deficit by rallying for 2 runs in the sixth
and the seventh innings.
Ohio Wesleyan loaded the bases with none out in the sixth on walks to
junior third baseman Sammy Hall (North
Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy),
senior outfielder Brian Gamble (Massillon/Perry)
and sophomore
first baseman Steve Toneatti (Ramsey, N.J./St. Stephen's Episcopal). Freshman
outfielder Josh Wheeler
(Columbus/Dublin
Scioto) followed with a line drive to left, with Hall tagging and scoring
on the play, and after freshman
second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) singled to reload the
bases, junior
outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) lofted a fly ball to right to
score Gamble.
The Bishops loaded the bases with none out again in the seventh, collecting
hits by sophomore second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto)
and senior
catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) and
a walk to Hall. One out later, freshman outfielder Wes Desmond (Frisco,
Texas/MacArthur)
lashed a hard-hit ball that caromed off Cougar shortstop Kyle Peters,
scoring Sherman, and Wheeler forced Desmond at second, with Strasburg
scoring the tying run on the play.
Mount Vernon Nazarene took a 1-0 lead in the first. Tim Martini led off
with a walk, and, 2 outs later, took off for second base. The throw by
freshman catcher Eric Stitzlein (Loudonville) was high, with Martini advancing
to third, and the run scored on Carl Langley's single.
Ohio Wesleyan got the run back in the bottom of the inning as Toney led
off with a single and moved to third when Cougar third baseman Richey
Burgos threw wildly on a bunt by junior
shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman).
Sherman walked to load the bases and the run scored when Strasburg bounced
into a double play.
Ty Dedinger lined a 2-run single in the third for the Cougars, but the
Bishops pulled to within 3-2 on back-to-back doubles by Williams and Sherman
in the bottom of the inning. Mount
Vernon came back with 3 runs in the top of the fourth, with Martini and
Peters stroking RBI singles.
Junior lefthander Josh Nice (Hinckley/Highland) pitched
the first 3-plus innings for Ohio Wesleyan. Junior
righthanders Billy Kampmann (Blairstown,
N.J./Blair Academy) and Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian)
each worked 2.0 innings of scoreless relief and Krieger pitched the final
2.0 innings and was charged with the loss.
Jake Poole, the sixth of 7 Cougar pitchers, was credited with the win
after pitching 2.0 innings of scoreless relief. Langley worked a scoreless
ninth and was credited with a save.
