Andrew
Pakla and Lee Fischer each drove in 5 runs as Denison swept a North Coast
Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader from Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday
at Littick Field.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 6-0 lead in the opener. The Bishops scored in
the first when sophomore
second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) struck out but
reached first base on a wild pitch to open the frame. Junior
outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) and senior
catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) followed
with walks before Sherman scored on a wild pitch.
Junior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman)
slammed a 2-run homer and Strasburg added an RBI single in the second,
sophomore outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) had an RBI single in
the third and Toney scored on the front end of a double steal in the fourth
to give the Bishops a 6-0 lead.
Meanwhile, junior righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) was in command,
holding the Big Red hitless through the first 4-plus innings. Pakla's
solo homer with 2 out in the top of the fifth was the first hit allowed
by Krieger.
Denison erupted for 8 runs in the sixth to take the lead. The Big Red
loaded the bases as Fischer walked, Brian Mulcahy singled and Chris Rios
was hit by a pitch. Tripp Dudley forced Fischer at home for the first
out, but Justin Dedman followed with a single to right, scoring Mulcahy,
and pinch-runner Danny Kreer scored when Ring did not field the ball cleanly.
Junior righthander Billy Kampmann (Blairstown,
N.J./Blair Academy) came on in relief and allowed a 2-run single to Pakla
before Chris Day put Denison ahead, 7-6, with a 2-run homer. Mulcahy added
a 2-run single later in the inning to cap the 8-run rally.
Fischer hit a bases-loaded double in the top of the seventh to increase
the Denison lead to 12-6.
The Bishops rallied in the bottom of the seventh, getting an RBI double
from Sherman and a 2-run single by Williams, but could not get the tying
run to the plate.
Kampmann was charged with the loss. Drew Shamrock, who started and pitched
the first 5.0 innings, was the winning pitcher.
In the nightcap, Denison took a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Day led
off with a double and the Big Red loaded the bases as A.J. Jezierski walked
and Shamrock was hit by a pitch. Rios walked to force in a run and chase
Bishop starter Kampmann, and the Big Red added runs on Fischer's ground
out and Mulcahy's RBI single.
Ohio Wesleyan got one run back in the bottom of the inning as Williams
lined a one-out single, moved to second on a walk to Toney and scored
on a single by junior third baseman Sammy Hall (North
Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy).
Freshman second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) singled to load
the bases, but
Denison starter Dallas Puskar retired sophomore first baseman Tom Bottichio
(Mason) to end the inning.
Denison added 3 runs in the top of the fourth, getting a walk and 3 straight
hits to open the inning, but the Bishops got those runs back on Sherman's
3-run homer in the bottom
of the frame.
Fischer's solo homer highlighted a 3-run Denison fifth.
Ohio Wesleyan again rallied in the bottom of the seventh, with Sherman
leading off with a walk and scoring on Williams' double. Two outs later,
Hall singled home Williams to bring the Bishops within 9-6, but Ohio Wesleyan
was not able to get the tying run to the plate.
Kampmann was charged with the loss, while Puskar worked the complete game
to pick up the win.
