Ohio Wesleyan 8, Wabash 4
Ohio Wesleyan 9, Wabash 5

April 9, 2005

Sophomore second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) slammed a 2-run homer to highlight a 4-run eighth inning that lifted the Bishops over Wabash in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Saturday at Crawfordsville, Ind.

In the nightcap, junior third baseman Sammy Hall (
North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) lined a 2-run single to highlight an 8-run sixth inning that helped Ohio Wesleyan complete a sweep of the twinbill.

Shane Noble gave Wabash an early lead with a 2-run double
in the bottom of the first inning of the opener.

The Bishops answered in the top of the second, tying the game at 2-2. Freshman second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) was hit by a pitch with one out and freshman outfielder Josh Wheeler
(Columbus/Dublin Scioto) walked before freshman outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) singled in Johnson and Wheeler scored on a wild pitch.

Junior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) belted a 2-run homer in the fifth for a 4-2 Ohio Wesleyan lead, but Wabash came back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, with one run scoring on Jared Bogan's RBI single and another on a Hall error.

Johnson gave the Bishops the lead in the top of the eighth, singling with one out, stealing second, moving to third on an infield out and scoring on a wild pitch. Wilkins was hit by a pitch before Sherman homered to left to hike the Bishop lead to 7-4. Hall added an RBI single later in the inning.

Junior righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) worked the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan. He allowed 8 hits, struck out 7 and walked 2.

John Thiry was the starting and losing pitcher for Wabash. He allowed 9 hits, struck out 4 and walked 6.

The Bishops took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap when
senior catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a Wabash error and scored on a single by freshman first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne).

It stayed that way until the sixth, when the Bishops broke the game open with 8 runs. Dote and Wheeler walked to open the inning, and both scored on Shane Noble's throwing error on Wilkins' sacrifice bunt. Sherman and
junior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) followed with singles, moved up on Toney's infield out and scored on Hall's single, with Hall taking second on the throw. Strasburg was intentionally walked and Johnson singled to load the bases before Dote plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Wheeler followed with an RBI single. Johnson wrapped up the scoring by stealing home on the front end of a double steal.

Wabash
got on the scoreboard on Bogan's 2-run homer in the bottom of the sixth and got a 2-run double from David Culp and an RBI single by Bogan in the bottom of the seventh to account for the 9-5 final.

Junior righthander Adam Dunn (
Westerville/Worthington Christian) pitched the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan, scattering 8 hits and striking out 2 while walking 3.

Bill Goff was the starting and losing pitcher for Wabash
.
