Ohio Wesleyan 3, Wabash 0
Ohio Wesleyan 11, Wabash 9

April 10, 2005

Freshman outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) and sophomore second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) drove in runs as Ohio Wesleyan erupted for 3 runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat Wabash in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Sunday at Crawfordsville, Ind.

In the nightcap,
junior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) and junior third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) each drove in 2 runs to highlight a 5-run sixth inning that helped Ohio Wesleyan complete a sweep of the twinbill and the series.

Freshman righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) and Wabash's Jon Horne locked into a pitchers' duel in the opener. Jones scattered 4 hits during the first 6.0 innings, while Horne limited the Bishops to 1 hit through the first 7.0 innings, allowing only one Ohio Wesleyan runner to reach third base.

Wabash threatened in the bottom of the seventh. Jones retired the first 2 batters before Danny Schubert and Jon Elwardt singled. David Culp walked to load the bases and the Bishops went to sophomore righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson), who fanned Scott Hamilton looking to send the game into extra innings.

The Bishops finally got to Horne in the top of the 10th. With one out,
freshman first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) and freshman outfielder Josh Wheeler (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) rapped back-to-back singles. Wilkins followed with a single, scoring one run, and Wheeler scored on Wabash rightfielder Phil Ramos' error on the play. Sherman followed with a single to score Wilkins for a 3-0 lead.

Ring was credited with the win after blanking Wabash over the last 3.1 innings. He allowed 3 hits and struck out 2. Jones had allowed 6 hits during the first 6.2 innings.

Horne was charged with the loss after allowing 6 hits through 9.1 innings.

In the nightcap, the Little Giants took a 2-0 first-inning lead when Billy King and Culp opened the inning with singles, moved up on a sacrifice and scored on Bogan's single. Wabash would load the bases later in the inning, but junior lefthander Josh Nice (Hinckley/Highland) got out of that jam.

Wabash struck again in the second inning. With one out, Matt Backs reached on an error by Sherman and Wabash loaded the bases on walks to King and Culp. Junior righthander Billy Kampmann (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) came on in relief but walked Shane Noble
and Bogan to force in 2 runs. Nick George followed with a 2-run single and Jon Elwardt lined an RBI single later in the inning to increase the Wabash lead to 7-0.

The Bishops bounced back, rallying for 3 runs after 2 were out in the top of the third. With 2 out, Sherman was hit by a pitch.
Junior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) followed with a single and junior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) scored both runners with a triple to center. Hall then plated Toney with a single to left.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 7-6 in the fourth. With one out, freshman shortstop Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy) singled and Wheeler followed with a double. Wilkins doubled in both runners and later scored on Williams' single to left.

Wabash answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning, with Bryan Scheffel lining a 2-run single to increase the Little Giant lead to 9-6.

The Bishops took the lead in the sixth. With one out, Wilkins reached on a throwing error by Wabash pitcher Judd Crowgey. Sherman followed with a single and Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Toney then singled, scoring Wilkins and Sherman, and Hall ripped a double down the leftfield line to plate Williams and Toney, and later scored on an error by Little Giant second baseman George.

Ring pitched through the Wabash sixth to pick up the win. He worked 4.2 innings, scattering 9 hits. Junior righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) retired the Little Giants in order in the seventh to earn his second save of the season.

Nick Rico was charged with the loss for Wabash
