Ohio Wesleyan 17, Thomas More 11

April 14, 2005

[ Kyle Sherman ]Sophomore shortstop Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) slammed a pair of home runs and junior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) hit for the cycle as Ohio Wesleyan outslugged Thomas More in non-conference action on Thursday at Littick Field.

The Saints touched
junior righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) for 5 runs in the top of the first inning. Noah Welte led off with a single and Nick Pieczonka drew a walk before Krieger bounced back to strike out Matt Wilson. The Saints then reeled off 4 straight hits, with Brad Thoma's 2-run double the key blow.

Ohio Wesleyan treated Thomas More starter Donny Capannari just as roughly, as the Bishops had their first 6 batters reach base in the bottom of the first. Sherman led off with a single and
junior second baseman Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) followed with a single before Toney ripped a 3-run homer to left. Junior third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) was hit by a pitch and scored on a triple by senior catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton), and freshman first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) tied the game with a single to plate Strasburg.

The Bishops took the lead in the second on Toney's RBI double, but the Saints came back in the third as Brad Ketterer smacked a leadoff homer, tying the game at 6-6.

Ohio Wesleyan
went ahead to stay in the bottom of the third when freshman outfielder Josh Wheeler (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) led off with a double and scored on Sherman's 2-run shot to deep center.

The Bishops added on to their lead with 7 runs in the fourth, with Sherman belting another majestic 2-run clout to center, and Toney and fr
eshman outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) contributing RBI triples in the inning.

Sherman capped the Ohio Wesleyan scoring with a 2-run single in the fifth.

Toney finished off his cycle in the eighth with a single down the leftfield line.

Sherman went 4-for-6 with 6 RBI, while Toney was 4-for-5 with 5 RBI to spearhead the Ohio Wesleyan offense. Toney became the first Bishop to hit for the cycle since March 25, 2000, when Jason Bogenrife did so against Penn State-Behrend.

Strasburg and Wheeler had 3 hits apiece and Williams and Dote had 2 hits each.

Krieger was the starting and winning pitcher for the Bishops, pitching 6-plus innings. Junior righthander Billy Kampmann (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) pitched an inning and
sophomore righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) finished up with 2 innings of scoreless relief.

Thoma had 3 hits and 3 RBI for the Saints, while Dan Buchwald also had 3 hits and Ketterer had 2 hits and drove in 2 runs.

Capannari was the starting and losing pitcher for Thomas More
.
