Ohio
Wesleyan 5, Urbana 3
Ohio Wesleyan 3, Urbana 1
April
16, 2005
Junior
third baseman Sammy Hall (North
Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) drove in 4 runs in the opener and freshman
righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) fired a 3-hitter
in the nightcap as Ohio Wesleyan swept a non-conference doubleheader from
Urbana on Saturday at Littick Field.
Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener when junior
second baseman Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman)
reached
on a fielder's choice, stole second, stole third and scored on Hall's
single to center.
The Blue Knights came back to take a 2-1 lead in the second. Urbana loaded
the bases with none out on infield singles by John Milliron and Josh Forsmark
sandwiched around a walk to Travis Cross. Junior righthander Adam Dunn
(Westerville/Worthington Christian) fanned Josh Stuntebeck for the first
out, but Trent Spellman bounced into a fielder's choice, with Milliron
scoring on the play. Cross then scored on a wild pitch to give Urbana
the lead.
Urbana added a run in the third when Nate Boyd beat out a bunt to open
the inning, took second on Dunn's wild pickoff throw and scored on Milliron's
2-out single.
The Bishops took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning when Williams
led off with a single, junior
outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) walked and Hall blasted a 3-run
shot to left.
Hall and freshman
outfielder Josh Wheeler
(Columbus/Dublin
Scioto) had 2 hits apiece.
Dunn pitched the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan, allowing 7 hits and
3 runs while striking out 4 and walking 3.
Brandin Pressnell was the starting and losing pitcher for Urbana.
In the nightcap, the Blue Knights jumped to a quick 1-0 lead when Milliron
hit a 2-out homer in the first inning.
That was it for the Urbana offense, though. Jones allowed only one runner
beyond first base during the remainder of the game, that coming with 2
down in the fourth when Jason
Ferguson reached third on a dropped fly ball.
Jones gave up a leadoff single to Stuntebeck in the second, but he was
erased on a double play, and Boyd sliced a single down the rightfield
line in the sixth but he was stranded at first.
Ohio Wesleyan tied the game in the bottom of the first. Sophomore
shortstop Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) led off with a single
and Williams reached on catcher's interference. After a double steal,
Toney walked to load the bases and Sherman scored on Hall's fielder's
choice grounder.
The
Bishops took the lead in the third when Sherman singled with one out and
stole second, then took off for third and scored when Urbana catcher Darren
Kipping threw wildly to third trying to get Sherman.
Ohio Wesleyan added an insurance run in the sixth when Williams reached
second on a dropped fly ball and scored on Strasburg's single.
Sherman and sophomore
outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) had 2 hits apiece for Ohio Wesleyan.
Jones struck out 7 and walked one in working the complete game.
Cross was the starting and losing pitcher for Urbana.
