April
17, 2005
Junior outfielder
Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) cracked a 2-run double to highlight a 6-run
first inning and freshman first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington
Kilbourne) and freshman outfielder Wes Desmond (Frisco, Texas/MacArthur)
slammed home runs to lead Ohio Wesleyan over Muskingum in non-conference
play on Sunday in New Concord.
The Bishops raced to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first as sophomore
shortstop Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) singled
and junior
second baseman Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman)
doubled.
Toney followed with a double to score both runners, and junior
third baseman Sammy Hall (North
Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) followed with yet another double to
plate Toney. Dote then beat out a single to third base, with Hall scoring
on a throwing error by Muskie third baseman Frank Hibbits on the play.
Senior catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) then reached on a
throwing error by Muskingum catcher Adam Long, and the runners moved to
second and third on a wild pitch. Freshman
outfielder Josh Wheeler
(Columbus/Dublin
Scioto) plated
Dote with an infield grounder and Desmond drove home Strasburg with a
sacrifice fly.
Ohio Wesleyan added 4 more runs in the third. Dote led off the frame with
a homer, then Strasburg singled,
moved to second on a sacrifice and took third on an infield out. After
freshman outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) walked, Strasburg
scored on a wild pitch, with Wilkins moving to second. Sherman then walked,
moved to second on Long's throwing error and went to third on a fielding
error by Muskie rightfielder Shawn Galloway, with Wilkins scoring on the
play. Williams then walked and Toney singled home Sherman for a 10-0 Bishop
lead.
Muskingum got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice
fly by Greg King and an RBI single by Galloway.
The Bishops came back in the fourth on walks to Hall and Strasburg before
Desmond belted a 3-run shot to give Ohio Wesleyan a 13-2 lead. Desmond
added an RBI double in the sixth and Strasburg ripped a bases-loaded triple
in the ninth to wrap up the Ohio Wesleyan scoring.
Desmond went 2-for-4 with 5 RBI to spearhead the Ohio Wesleyan offense.
Strasburg was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and scored 4 times, while Toney was 2-for-5
