Tiffin scored
7 runs in the top of the ninth inning to escape with a non-conference
win over Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday at Littick Field.
The Bishops had jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first inning. Sophomore
shortstop Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) and
went to third on a single by junior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland).
After Toney was erased, junior
third baseman Sammy Hall (North
Riverside, Ill./Nazareth Academy) walked and freshman
first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) singled home
Sherman for a 1-0 lead. Senior catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton)
then walked to load the bases and freshman outfielder Wes Desmond (Frisco,
Texas/MacArthur) singled home 2 runs. Freshman
outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) doubled
in 2 more runs and freshman
outfielder Josh Wheeler
(Columbus/Dublin
Scioto) plated
Wilkins with a single to cap the rally.
The Dragons got on the scoreboard on Ryan Gilson's solo homer in the second
and scratched out a run in the third to make it 6-2, but Ohio Wesleyan
came back in the bottom of the third as Desmond singled, Wilkins walked
and Wheeler singled to score a run.
Dan Dower doubled in a run in the Tiffin fourth to bring the Dragons within
7-3.
Sophomore
righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson)
came on to pitch the ninth and yielded singles to Chris Rothwell and Paul
Kidder to open the inning. Kyle Rehner then reached on Sherman's error
to load the bases and Dower doubled in 2 runs to close the gap to 7-5.
One out later, Rehner scored on a passed ball to make it 7-6, and the
tying run scored on Justin Blair's single. After a walk to Brad Stelzer,
junior
righthander Billy Kampmann (Blairstown, NJ/Blair Academy) came
on in relief. Ryan Rammel greeted Kampmann with a long fly ball to right,
with Blair scoring to put Tiffin ahead, 8-7. Matt Jennings then finished
off the rally with a 2-run homer.
Toney, Hall, Dote, Desmond and Wheeler each had 2 hits for Ohio Wesleyan,
with Desmond, Wilkins and Wheeler each driving in 2 runs.
Junior
righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) pitched the first 4.0 innings,
allowing 3 runs. Junior righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington
Christian) pitched 3.0 innings of hitless relief and freshman righthander
Justin Grota (San Antonio, Texas/MacArthur) worked a scoreless eighth.
Ring was charged with the loss.
Andrew Constantino pitched the complete game for Tiffin.
