Ohio Wesleyan 11, Earlham 2
Ohio Wesleyan 12, Earlham 2

April 27, 2005

Sophomore second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto), sophomore outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) and freshman outfielder Josh Wheeler (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) each drove in 2 runs to lift the Bishops over Earlham in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Wednesday in Richmond, Ind.

In the nightcap, junior outfielder Adam Toney (Galloway/Westland) went 4-for-4 and scored 3 runs and
freshman outfielder Wes Desmond (Frisco, Texas/MacArthur) drove in 3 runs to help Ohio Wesleyan complete the sweep.

The Ohio Wesleyan sweep, combined with Wittenberg's split with Denison, moves the Bishops into a tie with Wittenberg for second place in the NCAC West standings, but Wittenberg holds the edge over Ohio Wesleyan in the tiebreaker and will advance to the NCAC tournament. This is the first time in the 15-year history of the NCAC tournament that Ohio Wesleyan will not be one of the competing teams.

The Bishops jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second inning of the opener. With one out, Desmond reached second on an error by Quaker rightfielder Justin Colanese, took third on a ground out by freshman first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) and scored on Ring's infield single. Wheeler followed with an infield single before Sherman blasted a triple to plate both runners.
Junior shortstop Brandon Williams (Dublin/Coffman) followed with a single to score Sherman.

The Bishops tacked on 3 more runs in the fourth as Dote led off with a double and Ring followed with an infield single, then stole second. Dote then scored on Wheeler's ground out, and Sherman followed with an infield single to move Ring to third. Ring then scored on an error by Quaker pitcher Derrick Parkevich, with Sherman moving to third, and Toney followed with a single to score Sherman.

Earlham got on the scoreboard in the fifth on Rob Kinne's RBI single, but Ohio Wesleyan came back with 4 runs in the seventh with senior outfielder Brian Gamble (Massillon/Perry), Dote, Ring and Wheeler driving in runs.

Ring was 3-for-4 to highlight the Bishop offense, while Sherman, Williams, Toney, Dote and Wheeler had 2 hits apiece.

Junior righthander Michael Krieger (Boardman) pitched the complete game for the Bishops, allowing 5 hits and 2 earned runs. He struck out 8 and walked 5.

Parkevich was the starting and losing pitcher for Earlham.

The Bishops struck quickly in the nightcap, jumping on Quaker starter Josiah Young for 5 runs in the first inning. Sherman led off with a single, stole second and scored on Williams' double. Toney followed with an infield single and the runners moved to second and third on an infield out by
junior third baseman Sammy Hall (North Riverside, Ill./Nazareth). Senior catcher Matt Strasburg (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) then struck out but reached first on a wild pitch, with Williams scoring and Toney going to third on the play. After Strasburg stole second, Desmond singled home Toney and Strasburg. Ring walked and Desmond later scored on the front end of a double steal.

Ohio Wesleyan added 2 more runs in the second as Sherman tripled and Williams walked. Sherman scored on the front end of a double steal before Toney singled in Williams.

The Bishops made it 10-0 with 3 runs in the fourth, with Hall, sophomore first baseman Steve Toneatti (Ramsey, N.J./St. Stephen's Episcopal) and Ring driving in runs, and wrapped up their scoring with 2 runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Strasburg and a single by Desmond.

Sherman was 2-for-2 with 2 runs scored, while Desmond had 3 hits and drove in 3 runs and Hall added 2 hits.

Junior righthander Adam Dunn (Westerville/Worthington Christian) started for the Bishops, pitching 3.0 innings of 2-hit, shutout baseball. Junior lefthander Josh Nice (Hinckley/Highland) pitched the final 4.0 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs while striking out 5, to collect the win.

Young was the starting and losing pitcher for Earlham
