Thiel
22, Ohio Wesleyan 19
Sept. 11, 2004
Darrell
Satterfield tossed a 25-yard TD pass to Brandon Chambers to put Thiel
ahead to stay, and the Tomcats withstood a game-tying field goal attempt
to hold on for a non-conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at
Selby Field.
The Bishops had taken a 3-0 lead on a 34-yard field goal by junior Jason
Whitcomb (Wauseon), then increased their lead to 10-0 in the second quarter
when junior quarterback Ryan Sir Louis (Hinckley/Highland) found sophomore
halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) on a post pattern that went for 63
yards and a touchdown.
Thiel closed to within 10-7 when Satterfield and Chambers connected on
a 54-yard pass play with 4:55 left in the third quarter, but Ohio Wesleyan
marched down the field, covering 75 yards in 9 plays, with Whitcomb drilling
a 22-yard field goal to give the Bishops a 13-7 lead with :32 left in
the third quarter.
Satterfield and Chambers connected again early in the fourth period, this
time on a 19-yard scoring play that capped a 9-play, 58-yard drive that
took 1:29 and tied the game at 13-13. Paul Stibich followed with the conversion
to give the Tomcats a 14-13 lead.
After the teams traded punts, the Bishops got the ball back in excellent
field position, taking over at the Thiel 38-yard line with 10:03 left
in regulation time. Ohio Wesleyan picked up one first down and had the
ball on the Tomcat 23 when senior
halfback Eric Indiciani (Delaware/Olentangy) fumbled at the Thiel 6.
Thiel could not generate a first down and the Tomcats had to punt again,
and senior defensive back Brian Gamble (Massillon/Perry) returned the
ball to the Thiel 25 with 7:07 to play.
This time, Ohio Wesleyan took advantage of its good field position, with
junior halfback Ryan Mead (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) picking up 17
yards for a first down at the 7, and, 2 plays later, Indiciani going over
from 2 yards out to give the Bishops a 19-14 lead. Ohio Wesleyan went
for 2 points, but the conversion attempt failed.
The Tomcats came out firing on the ensuing possession, with Satterfield
hitting Tom Mcentire for 18 yards, then connecting with Chambers for 17
more. John Dziurzynski picked up 10 yards on a draw play, and after Satterfield
hit Dane Haskins for 7 yards, he found Chambers down the right sideline
for 25 and a touchdown that gave Thiel a 20-19 edge with 3:14 to play.
Satterfield then connected with Mcentire for a 2-point conversion that
boosted the lead to 3 points at 22-19.
Ohio Wesleyan turned to the air
as well, with Sir Louis finding senior fullback
Nathanael Jonhenry (Berea) for 20 yards on a fourth-and-3 call to keep
the Bishops alive, then hitting junior split end Rick Rodgers (Medina/Parma)
for 11 yards and a first down at the Tomcat 36.
Sir Louis picked up another first down with a run to the Thiel 12-yard
line, but at this point the Bishops were out of timeouts and Sir Louis
spiked the ball to stop the clock with :14 to play.
Ohio Wesleyan took one shot at the end zone, but Sir Louis wasn't able
to connect with Indiciani, and with :10 left, the field goal team came
on for a 30-yard field goal try that would have tied the game at 22-22.
Whitcomb's kick had enough distance but was wide left, and Thiel ran out
the clock to escape with the win.
Sir
Louis completed 14 of 23 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown, and picked
up a team-leading 70 yards on 18 rushes. Rice and Rodgers each caught
3 passes, with Rice collecting 80 yards and Rodgers 23. Gamble returned
4 punts to become Ohio Wesleyan's all-time leader in punt returns, raising
his career total to 82 and surpassing the mark of 79 set by Pepe Villaseņor
(1997-2000).
For Thiel, Satterfield completed 21 of 34 passes for 304 yards and 3 TDs,
all to Chambers, who caught 9 passes for 178 yards. Dzuirzynski rushed
20 times for 74 yards.
Junior linebacker Jeff King (Sidney/Piqua) led the Bishops with 12 tackles.
Freshman linebacker Chad Ellis (Dublin/Scioto) added 9 stops, including
1 for loss; junior defensive end Cisco Clervoix (Naples, Fla.) had 7 tackles,
including 1 for loss; and sophomore defensive back Kyle Sherman (Plain
City/Dublin Scioto) made 7 tackles and intercepted a Tomcat pass.
