Sleight scored twice as Olivet jumped to a 28-0 first quarter lead and
went on to defeat Ohio Wesleyan in non-conference action on Saturday at
Olivet, Mich.
The Comets scored on their first 4 possessions of the game. Olivet took
the opening kickoff and drove 49 yards in 4 plays, with Sleight going
over from 6 yards out for a 7-0 lead with 13:07 left in the first quarter.
After the Bishops fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Olivet recovered on
the Ohio Wesleyan 16, the Comets drove 16 yards in 4 plays, with Kemp
Luchie scoring on a 2-yard run to make it 14-0. Sleight's 37-yard run
capped an 85-yard drive on Olivet's next possession, and Dwight Houston
scored from 2 yards out to give the Comets a 28-0 lead with 3:20 left
in the first quarter.
Ohio Wesleyan got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter. With
Olivet in possession, Houston got the ball at the Olivet 25-yard line
but was hit by junior defensive tackle Stephen
Greene (Mansfield/Senior).
Greene recovered the fumble and got it to freshman defensive back Patrick
Trenor (Urbana), who scored on a 30-yard return to bring the Bishops within
28-7.
Sleight scored on a 2-yard run on Olivet's next possession to increase
the Comet lead to 35-7.
Junior quarterback Ryan Sir Louis (Hinckley/Highland) scored on a 1-yard
plunge to bring the Bishops within 35-14 with 2:32 left in the first half,
but Olivet answered with Mick Faasen's 8-yard run with :35 left before
intermission, giving the Comets a 42-15 halftime lead.
Olivet scored the only touchdown of the third quarter on Rick Mason's
25-yard pass to Josh Ewing, and the Comets got a pair of scoring runs
from Isaiah Wiltshire in the fourth quarter.
Sir Louis and sophomore halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) connected on
an 80-yard scoring pass to wrap up the Ohio Wesleyan scoring.
Rice
led the Bishops in rushing and receiving, gaining 63 yards on 5 rushes
and catching 4 passes for 106 yards. Sir Louis completed 6 of 15 passes
for 125 yards and a touchdown.
For Olivet, Faasen gained 181 yards on 21 carries and Sleight finished
with 84 yards and 3 touchdowns on his 9 rushes. Mason completed 1 of 3
passes for 25 yards.
Sophomore linebacker Dominic Schwed (Aurora)
led the Bishops with 13 tackles. sophomore
defensive end Owen Case (Marion/River Valley) and sophomore
cornerback Tom Thome (Macedonia/Nordonia)
added 10 stops apiece, with Case contributing a sack and Thome a tackle
for loss. Junior
defensive end Cisco Clervoix (Naples, Fla.) had 7 tackles, including 1
for loss; and sophomore linebacker Brett Lonjak (Medina/Highland)
contributed 6 tackles.
