Ohio
Wesleyan 35, Denison 6
Oct. 16, 2004
Sophomore
halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) put the Bishops on the scoreboard with
a 3-yard run and junior quarterback Ryan Sir Louis (Hinckley/Highland)
ran for 2 touchdowns as Ohio Wesleyan took full advantage of 3 turnovers
deep in Denison territory to swamp the Big Red in North Coast Athletic
Conference action on Saturday in Granville.
Of the Bishops' 5 scoring drives, the only one that was longer than 32
yards was a 68-yard possession that ended in a 56-yard scoring run by
senior halfback Eric Indiciani (Delaware/Olentangy).
While not technically a turnover, the opening kickoff set the tone of
the game when Denison failed to cover the ball and the Bishops recovered
on the Big Red 27-yard line. Rice ran for 10 yards to pick up one first
down, and Indiciani picked up 5 yards on a third-and-2 play from the Denison
9, setting up Rice's 3-yard TD run just 2:28 into the game.
The Bishops' next golden opportunity came midway through the second quarter
when sophomore defensive back Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto)
picked off a Larry Cappetto pass at the Ohio Wesleyan 37 and returned
it to the Denison 34. After a personal foul penalty was tacked on, the
Bishops were in business at the Big Red 19-yard line. Sir Louis and Rice
each picked up 5 yards to set up a first-and-goal, and 2 Sir Louis carries
later, the Bishops were in the end zone. Junior Jason Whitcomb (Wauseon)
added the point after to give Ohio Wesleyan a 14-0 lead with 9:22 left
in the first half.
Ohio Wesleyan forced another turnover on its next possession, with sophomore
linebacker Dominic Schwed (Aurora) forcing and recovering a Fred Lee fumble
at the Big Red 45. Indiciani reeled off 33 yards on the first play to
give the Bishops a first down at the Denison 12, but 2 plays later, Sir
Louis was intercepted in the end zone by Tim Koprowski.
Indiciani's 56-yard TD run capped the Bishops' first possession of the
second half and gave Ohio Wesleyan a 21-0 lead.
Later in the quarter, junior defensive end Cisco Clervoix (Naples, Fla.)
sacked Cappetto, forced a fumble and recovered the ball at the Big Red
23. Sir Louis and Indiciani each carried twice, with Sir Louis going over
from 9 yards out to increase the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 28-0.
Denison threatened early in the fourth quarter, driving to a first down
at the Ohio Wesleyan 4-yard line, but the Bishop defense stiffened and
eventually stopped Cappetto for no gain on a fourth-and-goal play from
the Bishop 5. Rice gained 22 yards to get the Bishops out of the shadow
of their own goal post, but the drive bogged down there and Ohio Wesleyan
was forced to punt.
Freshman defensive back Patrick Trenor (Urbana) forced a Derek Fry fumble
on the return, however, giving Ohio Wesleyan the ball at the Denison 32-yard
line. Junior fullback Tony Anderson (Westerville/Thomas Worthington) converted
a pair of third-down situations and junior halfback Ryan Mead (Rockville,
Md./Good Counsel) capped the drive with a 1-yard run that made the score
35-0 with 4:58 to play.
The Big Red averted the shutout when Joey Thees broke loose for 29 yards
and a score on a fourth-and-1 situation with 2:43 left in the game.
Indiciani led the Bishops with 137 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries,
while Anderson finished with 59 yards on 14 rushes and Sir Louis ran for
47 yards on 14 carries. Sir Louis completed 2 of 6 passes for 14 yards,
with sophomore split end Jody Vasileff (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) catching
both passes.
Thees picked up 48 yards on 5 carries to lead Denison ground gainers.
Cappetto completed 12 of 22 passes for 108 yards, with Zack Brent making
5 catches for 47 yards.
Junior linebacker Jeff King (Sidney/Piqua) led the Bishops with 9 tackles,
with Clervoix adding 8 stops, including a sack and another for loss.
