Ohio Wesleyan 30, Kenyon 24

Oct. 23, 2004

Senior halfback Eric Indiciani (Delaware/Olentangy) broke loose on a 59-yard run to break a 24-24 tie and lift Ohio Wesleyan over Kenyon in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Selby Field.

With the score tied at 24-24 midway through the fourth quarter, the Bishops got the ball at their own 18-yard line. Junior quarterback Ryan Sir Louis (Hinckley/Highland) picked up 9 yards on third-and-3 from the 25, then ran for 7 more to set up a second-and-3 at the Bishop 41. Indiciani then went through the right side, bowled over Lord defensive back Nick Fanning and continued on into the end zone to give Ohio Wesleyan the lead.

The Ohio Wesleyan defense held Kenyon on fourth down on its next possesion, giving the Bishops the ball back on the Lord 38 with 3:48 left in the game. The Bishops gained 2 first downs and were able to run out the clock.

The Bishops scored on the game's opening possession, getting excellent field position by recovering a Kenyon onside kick at the Lord 49. Indiciani rumbled for 13 yards on a third-and-1 from the Kenyon 40, and sophomore halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) reeled off 19 yards on the next play to set up a first-and-goal from the Kenyon 8. Two plays later, junior fullback Tony Anderson (Westerville/Thomas Worthington) went over from 1 yard out to give the Bishops the lead.

Kenyon came back with a long drive late in the quarter, capped by a Nick Stalick-to-Rafael Sanchez pass that covered 12 yards to even the game at 7-7. Key plays included a Stalick quarterback sneak for 3 yards on fourth-and-1 from the Kenyon 41.

Ohio Wesleyan answered quickly, with Rice breaking loose for a 49-yard scoring run on the first play of the second quarter to give the Bishops a 14-7 lead.

The Lords closed to within 14-10 on their next possession, driving to a first-and-goal at the Bishop 8-yard line but electing to go for the field goal on fourth down from the 3. John Currier converted 20-yard kick for Kenyon.

The Bishops got the field goal back on their first drive of the second half, marching to the Kenyon 3 before junior Jason Whitcomb (Wauseon) hit a 20-yard kick to make it a 17-10 game.

Tailback Alby Coombs helped bring the Lords back, carrying the ball 6 times on Kenyon's next possession. The Bishop defense stiffened, however, and forced a fourth-and-3 from the Ohio Wesleyan 5-yard line. Rafael Sanchez, now in at quarterback for Kenyon, appeared to be caught for a loss by freshman linebacker Chad Ellis (Dublin/Scioto), but Sanchez avoided the onrushing Bishop defender and scrambled into the end zone. Currier's point after tied the game at 17-17 with 1:05 left in the third quarter.

Once again, Ohio Wesleyan answered quickly, this time with Sir Louis connecting with junior split end Colby Welanetz (Carlsbad, Calif.) for 43 yards down the right side. Kenyon was penalized for roughing the passer on the play, tacking on an additional 10 yards and giving the Bishops a first down at the Lord 8. Two plays later, Indiciani went over from 5 yards out, and Whitcomb added the conversion for a 24-17 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

Kenyon once again turned to Coombs and Sanchez, and the duo helped the Lords
move down the field. Coombs ran on 4 straight plays to pick up one first down, then Sanchez found Carlin Shoemaker down the left side for 46 yards and a first down at the Bishop 15. Coombs picked up 11 yards for a first down at the Ohio Wesleyan 4, and on third down, went over from 1 yard out. Currier's point after tied the game at 24-24 with 8:01 left in regulation time.

Indiciani led the Bishops with 135 yards on 16 carries, while Rice finished with 127 yards on 11 attempts. Sir Louis added 70 yards on 10 rushers and completed 2 of 9 passes for 48 yards.

Coombs led Kenyon with 140 yards on 36 carries. Stalick completed 10 of 21 passes for 94 yards and Sanchez not only completed 2 of 4 passes for 93 yards but caught 5 passes for 59 yards.

Junior linebacker Jeff King (Sidney/Piqua) led the Bishops with 13 tackles, while sophomore end Owen Case (Marion/River Valley) had 12 stops, including 1 1/2 sacks.
Junior defensive end Cisco Clervoix (Naples, Fla.) had 7 tackles, including 2 1/2 sacks.
