Ohio Wesleyan 24, Oberlin 14

Nov. 6, 2004

[ Eric Indiciani ]Senior halfback Eric Indiciani (Delaware/Olentangy) and junior halfback Matt Carducci (Hudson) ran for first-quarter touchdowns to help Ohio Wesleyan overcome an early deficit and the Bishops went on to top Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Oberlin.

The win moves Ohio Wesleyan's conference record to 5-1. Ohio Wesleyan will face Wooster next Saturday, with the winner of the game receiving the NCAC's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. An Ohio Wesleyan win would result in the Bishops and Fighting Scots sharing the NCAC championship, while a Wooster win would give the Fighting Scots the title outright.

Oberlin jumped to an early lead when Chris Schubert broke loose on a 75-yard run on the second play from scrimmage.

Ohio Wesleyan struck back quickly, marching 80 yards in less than 2 minutes. Sophomore halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) reeled off 16 yards on first down, junior quarterback Ryan Sir Louis (Hinckley/Highland) followed with a 9-yard gain, Indiciani broke free for 27 yards and senior fullback Nathanael Jonhenry (Berea) picked up 11 yards before Indiciani stormed into the end zone from 17 yards out with 12:08 on the clock. The point after attempt failed, leaving Oberlin with a 7-6 lead.

Sophomore defensive back Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) recovered a Yeomen fumble on Oberlin's next possession, setting the Bishops up at the Yeomen 45-yard line. From there, it took Ohio Wesleyan 7 plays to reach the end zone, with Carducci scoring on an 11-yard run to put the Bishops ahead for good. Rice picked up 17 yards to give the Bishops a first down at the Oberlin 18 before Carducci scored on third-and-3 from the 11. Carducci rushed for a 2-point conversion to increase the Bishop lead to 14-7.

The Bishops put together a long drive on their next possession, marching 71 yards in 14 plays, with Sir Louis finding Rice on a 4-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter. Ohio Wesleyan converted a pair of third-down situations and a fourth-down during the drive. Indiciani picked up 5 yards on third-and-2 from the Bishop 37, Sir Louis found Rice for 7 yards on fourth-and-5 from the Oberlin 31, and Indiciani broke loose for 11 yards on third-and-9 from the Oberlin 23. Junior Jason Whitcomb (Wauseon) converted the extra point to increase the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 21-7.

Sherman squelched another Oberlin threat on the next Yeomen possession, picking off a Ryan Squatrito pass at the Ohio Wesleyan 15-yard line. Oberlin drove to a first down the Bishop 25-yard line on its following possession, but the Bishop defense held, stopping Travis Oman for no gain and then forcing 3 straight incompletions to give the ball back to the office.

Oberlin closed to within 21-14 in the last minute of the first half, with Chris Jordan's 2-yard scoring run capping a 6-play, 65-yard drive.

Whitcomb added a 35-yard field goal late in the third quarter to hike the Bishop lead to 24-14. Indiciani set up the kick with a 33-yard run that give Ohio Wesleyan a first down at the Yeomen 25.

Oberlin threatened once more in the game, gaining a first down at the Bishop 4-yard line, but Jordan fumbled and freshman defensive back Josh Wheeler (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) recovered to preserve the 10-point margin.
