Ohio Wesleyan 2, Kenyon 1

Sophomore attacker Julie Higgins (Gladstone, N.J./Voorhees) scored the game-winning goal with 2:43 left in regulation time to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Kenyon in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Tuesday at the Henry Street Field.

The loss was the first of the season for Kenyon, which had entered the game with a 6-0 record, including a 1-0 mark in NCAC action.

With the score tied, 1-1, freshman attacker Mackenzie Rader (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy) centered the ball from the right wing, and Higgins sent a one-time shot into the left side of the Kenyon cage for a 2-1 Bishop lead.

Kenyon did not go quietly, threatening until the final whistle. In the last minute, Ladies forward Sarah Pfeifer sent the ball across the goal mouth to Maggie Rose at the right post, but Rosen could not get the ball into the Bishop goal. As the clock wound down, Kenyon earned a penalty corner, and while the Ladies were not able to get off a shot, they got another penalty corner to keep the game alive. After the second corner, the Bishop defense again held Kenyon without a shot, finally breaking up the play and ending the game.

The Ladies had jumped to an early 1-0 lead when Pfeifer took a pass from Julia Sivon on the left wing and hit a 10-foot shot just 4:31 into the game.

Ohio Wesleyan evened the score midway through the first half, when freshman midfielder Polly Burke (Milton, Mass.) pumped a 15-foot shot past Kenyon keeper Kimberly Brown.

Kenyon outshot the Bishops, 18-5. Freshman Katie Jones (Pine Plains, N.Y./Stissing Mountain) had 3 saves in the Ohio Wesleyan cage. Brown did not make a save for Kenyon.
