Washington & Jefferson 2, Ohio Wesleyan 1

Junior defender Shelley Fisher (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) scored to bring the Bishops within 2-1, but Washington & Jefferson held on to escape with a non-conference win on Saturday at the Henry Street Field.

The Presidents took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. The ball was crossed into the circle, but the Bishop defense broke up the play. Beth Kelley won the loose ball and hit a shot into the left side of the Ohio Wesleyan cage.

W&J increased its lead to 2-0 early in the second half as Laura Koch hit a shot from the right side. The shot was blocked by the Bishop defense, but the ball went back to Koch, and she scored on the offensive rebound with 27:05 left in regulation time.

The Ohio Wesleyan offense, which did not get off a shot during the first half, came to life during the second half.

The Bishops closed to within 2-1 on Fisher's goal with 17:51 left in regulation time. Ohio Wesleyan had earned a penalty corner, and sophomore attacker Julie Higgins (Gladstone, N.J./Voorhees) ripped a shot at the President cage. W&J keeper Heather Browne stopped Higgins' shot but could not control the ball, and Fisher was there for the putback.

Ohio Wesleyan nearly tied the game 3 minutes later on another corner, but a shot by freshman midfielder Polly Burke (Milton, Mass.) hit the left post.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Washington & Jefferson, 6-5. Freshman Katie Jones (Pine Plains, N.Y./Stissing Mountain) and senior Liz Stone (Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional) each allowed one goal in the Bishop cage. Browne finished with 2 saves for the Presidents.
