John Wagner hit a 3-pointer that put Denison ahead to stay
and Tony Julian scored 4 straight points to kick off a key second-half
run that helped the Big Red defeat the Bishops in North Coast Athletic
Conference action on Wednesday in Granville.
Ohio Wesleyan had raced to an early 14-9 lead, with senior guard Bryan
King (Sidney) hitting a 3-pointer and a 2-pointer and freshman post Dustin
Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) adding a pair of baskets before Denison rallied
to tie the game at 16-16. The Big Red went on to take a 12-point lead
late in the first half and still led by a score of 45-35 with 17:55 left
in regulation time.
The Bishops stormed back, getting a pair of baskets from sophomore post
Ben Chojnacki (Medina), a 3-pointer by King and a basket and 2 free throws
by Rudegeair, to slice the gap to 47-46 with 14:13 left, and after Denison's
Robb Hern scored, King drilled another 3-pointer to even the game at 49-49
with 13:39 to play.
Denison took a 51-49 lead on another Hern basket, but sophomore
wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) converted a 3-point lay to
give the Bishops a 52-51 lead with 12:16 left, but Wagner answered with
a 3-pointer on the Big Red's next possession gave Denison the lead for
good.
Ohio Wesleyan trailed, 59-57, on Chojnacki's 3-point play with 9:47 left
in regulation time, but the Big Red then went on a 16-4 tear to break
open the game. Julian had a basket and a pair of free throws to kick off
the Denison spurt, then Dan Izzo added a jumper to make it a 65-57 game
with 7:25 to play.
King hit a free throw and a 3-pointer to bring the Bishops back to within
67-61 with 4:42 left, but on Denison's next possession, the Big Red got
a 3-pointer from Pete Harris, with Izzo drawing a foul on the play, and
Izzo's 2 free throws completed a 5-point possession that hiked the lead
to 72-61 with 4:24 remaining.
Chojnacki led one final Bishop comeback attempt, collecting a basket,
a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer during a frantic rally to brought
Ohio Wesleyan to within 76-68 with 1:07 left, but the Bishops would not
score again.
Chojnacki the Bishops with 23 points and 5 rebounds, while King finished
with 15 points.
Dan Hodgkinson led the Big Red with 18 points, while Hern added 14 points
and a team-high 13 rebounds. Izzo scored 12 points and Wagner and Harris
