Wittenberg 61, Ohio Wesleyan 49

Dane Borchers and Daniel Russ had 2 baskets apiece during a key 10-3 run and Wittenberg held Ohio Wesleyan to one basket during a span of more than 8 minutes early in the second half as the Tigers defeated the Bishops in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Bishops led through most of the first half and held a 27-23 advantage on a 3-pointer by junior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) with 5:30 left in the period, but Wittenberg scored the last 9 points of the half to take a 32-27 halftime lead. Kenny Brady's 3-pointer tied the game at 27-27 with 3:22 left, then Borchers added a basket and Brett Bowen sank a 3-pointer with :31 left in the half.

Ohio Wesleyan had closed to within 34-31 on a lay-in by senior guard Bryan King (Sidney) with 18:19 left in the half, but the Bishops scored just one basket during the next 8 minutes. Sophomore post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) ended the Ohio Wesleyan drought with a tip-in with 10:01 to go that made the score 44-36, but the Bishops would not come closer than that 8-point margin during the remainder of the game.

Chojnacki led the Bishops with 17 points and 5 rebounds, while Warnock finished with 11 points. Junior guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) had a team-high 4 assists.

Borchers led the Tigers with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Russ added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Danny Brywczynski led Wittenberg with 3 assists.
