Ohio
Wesleyan 68, Oberlin 51
Feb.
2, 2005
Junior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) hit a 3-pointer to
key a 9-0 first-half run and the Ohio Wesleyan defense held Oberlin without
a field goal for a stretch of 7 minutes during the second half as the
Bishops defeated the Yeomen in North Coast Athletic Conference play on
Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Both teams started out slowly, but the Bishops pulled ahead by a score
of 15-7 at the midway point of the first half.
Oberlin got a pair of 3-pointers by Quinton Spencer and a basket by Dewayne
Evans to pull within 18-15 with 7:30 left in the period, but Ohio Wesleyan
answered with a fast break bucket by sophomore post Ben Chojnacki (Medina)
to kick off the 9-0 run.
Senior guard Bryan King (Sidney) followed with a lay-in, then Warnock
connected from long range to give the Bishops a 25-15 lead with 5:08 left
in the half. Freshman post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) added 2 free
throws to stretch the Bishop lead to an even dozen at 27-15, and the Bishops
ended up leading by 12 at halftime, at 31-19.
Spencer hit a layup and a 3-pointer in the opening minutes of the second
half to bring Oberlin within 31-24, and the Yeomen were still within 42-34
on Jordan Beard's 3-pointer with 12:33 to play. Rudegeair and freshman
guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/St. Charles) scored for the Bishops and
Matthew Godwin answered with a bucket for Oberlin to make it a 46-36 game
with 11:24 left.
The Yeomen did not score another basket until Steve Reid hit a lay-in
with 4:20 to play, and by then, Ohio Wesleyan was on top by a 62-40 margin.
Rudegeair started off the Bishop spurt with a lay-in, and freshman post
Ryan Rozak (Fairview Park/Fairview) converted both an old-fashioned 3-point
play and a 3-point basket.
Rudegeair led the Bishops with 14 points and shared the team lead with
6 rebounds. Warnock added 13 points, senior guard Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks)
also shared the team lead with 6 rebounds and had a team-high 4 assists.
Spencer led the Yeomen with 19 points and shared the team lead with 4
rebounds. Matthew Kaplan also shared the team lead with 4 rebounds and
Evans and Reid had 2 assists apiece.
