Wittenberg 65, Ohio Wesleyan 53

Senior guard Bryan King (Sidney) hit a 3-pointer and sophomore post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) and sophomore wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Watterson) scored to bring the Bishops within 55-50, but Wittenberg scored the next 8 points and sealed the game at the line to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday in Springfield.

The Tigers had taken a 55-44 lead on Dane Borchers' basket with 6:57 left in regulation time when King answered with a 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession. Chojnacki hit a free throw to make it a 55-48 game with 5:27 to go, and Uritus followed with a bucket to make it a 55-50 game with 4:41 remaining.

Wittenberg ended its drought with a basket by Daniel Russ, and Borchers added a hoop on the Tigers' next possession to give Wittenberg a 59-50 lead with 2:33 to play.

With the Bishops forced to foul, Danny Brywczynski and Phil Steffes each hit a pair of free throws, extending the Wittenberg lead to 63-50 with :55 to play.

Ohio Wesleyan had tied the game at 2-2 on a jumper by junior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes), but Wittenberg scored the next 8 points to take a 10-2 lead, and the Tigers built a 37-24 lead in the closing minutes of the first half.

The Bishops closed to within 37-28 at halftime, getting a pair of baskets by Uritus, and Ohio Wesleyan opened the second half by chipping away even further, with freshman post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) sinking 2 free throws and Chojnacki following with a jumper to make it 37-32. Ohio Wesleyan would close to within 5 points on 3 other occasions, the last being the 55-50 margin, but that was as close as the Bishops would come to the lead.

Chojnacki and Uritus shared the team lead with 11 points apiece, while Warnock and Rudegeair finished with 10 points each. Rudegeair led the Bishops with 6 rebounds and Uritus had a team-high 3 assists.

Andy Bucheit led the Tigers with 17 points, while Daniel Russ had 12 points. Borchers led all players with 12 rebounds.
