Wooster 76, Ohio Wesleyan 62

Freshman wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North) scored 8 points and sophomore post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) added 7 as Ohio Wesleyan sliced a 20-plus point deficit to 5, but Wooster pulled away in the closing minutes to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday at Wooster.

Ohio Wesleyan finishes in sixth place in the final conference standings. The Bishops will visit Wabash in an NCAC tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday at Crawfordsville, Ind. NCAC tournament bracket

The Bishops had jumped to an early 8-4 lead, breaking a 4-4 with a lay-up by freshman post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) and 2 free throws by Chojnacki, but Wooster rallied to tie the game at 8-8 and took the lead for good on Blake Mealer's 3-point play that gave Wooster a 13-12 edge with 13:18 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan still trailed, 17-16, when Wooster went on an 11-2 spurt that featured a 4-point play by Devin Fulk and a 3-pointer by Kyle Witucky. Matt Schlingman and Tom Port added lay-ins to give the Fighting Scots a 28-18 lead with 7:02 left in the first half. The Scots took a 43-25 lead into the locker room and increased the margin to 21 points on Schlingman's 3-pointer in the opening seconds of the second half.

Chojnacki answered with a 3-pointer for the Bishops, and after the teams traded points, junior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes), senior guard Bryan King (Sidney) and Cafarella reeled off consecutive hoops to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 48-36 with 14:42 remaining in regulation time.

With the Bishops trailing, 53-40, Cafarella knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 53-46 with 11:52 to go. Wooster scored the next 4 points, as Witucky sank a pair of free throws and James Cooper had a lay-in, but once again Ohio Wesleyan stormed back, this time with a Rudegeair lay-in and a King 3-pointer to close within 57-51 with 9:13 to go.

After 2 Wooster free throws, senior guard Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks) buried a 3-pointer to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 59-54 with 7:44 on the clock, and after the teams traded points, it was a 61-56 game with 6:39 to play,

Schlingman converted a 3-point play on Wooster's next possession, and after a pair of free throws by sophomore wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Watterson), Port knocked down a 3-pointer to give Wooster a 68-58 lead with 4:28 remaining, and the Bishops would not score another basket until Uritus' hoop in the closing seconds.

Chojnacki led the Bishops with 17 points, while Rudegeair finished with 12 points and a team-leading 11 rebounds. King led the Bishops with 5 assists.

Schlingman led the Fighting Scots with 21 points, going 8-for-8 from the field. Port had 12 points and led the Scots with 9 rebounds and 4 assists, while Cooper added 10 points.
