Zimmer's basket capped a 7-0 Wabash run to end the first half, and the
Little Giants pulled away during the second half to defeat Ohio Wesleyan
in a a North Coast Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal matchup
on Tuesday at Crawfordsville, Ind.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken an early 3-2 lead on a 3-pointer by junior wing
Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes), but Wabash scored the next 6 points to
take an 8-3 lead.
The Bishops stormed back to within 10-9 on a 3-pointer by freshman
wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North) and a 3-point play by sophomore
post Ben Chojnacki (Medina). Ohio Wesleyan eventually tied the game at
16-16 on Cafarella's 3-pointer with 8:13 left in the first half and surged
ahead on 3 straight free throws by Chojnacki for a 19-16 lead with 6:47
remaining.
Wabash came back to tie the game on 3 free throws by Adonis Joseph, then
took the lead on Zimmer's tip-in with 4:42 left in the first half. Wes
Koch added a bucket to give Wabash a 23-19 lead, but Cafarella answered
with a hoop to bring the Bishops within 23-21 with 2:52 remaining.
The Little Giants then got a pair of free throws from David Wagner, a
3-pointer by Michael Woods and a basket from Zimmer to take a 30-21 lead
into the locker room.
Senior guard Bryan King (Sidney) buried a 3-pointer to open the second
half, whittling the gap to 30-24, but Wabash came back with an 11-2 run
that included a 3-pointer and a lay-in by Kyle Coffey. Zimmer's basket
with 11:51 left capped the run and gave Wabash a 41-26 lead, and after
Chojnacki sank a pair of free throws for Ohio Wesleyan, Zimmer buried
a 3-pointer to give the Little Giants a 44-28 lead with 11:21 to go.
Chojnacki's lay-in with :26 remaining brought Ohio Wesleyan to within
61-52, and that was as close as the Bishops would come.
Chojnacki
led the Bishops with 23 points. King posted team highs of 5 rebounds and
3 assists.
Caleb Lyttle and Coffey each scored 12 points for Wabash, with Lyttle
adding a game-high 12 rebounds.
