Albion 76, Ohio Wesleyan 61

Travis DePree and Zak Silas hit baskets as Albion closed the first half with a 5-0 run and Brandon Crawford had 2 lay-ins during a 10-2 second-half burst that helped the Britons pull away from Ohio Wesleyan in the championship game of the Albion Tip-Off Classic on Saturday at Albion, Mich.

Junior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) gave the Bishops their first lead of the game by sinking a pair of free throws to break a 16-16 tie.

Albion came back to take a 20-18 lead on a pair of DePree baskets, and the margin was still 2 points after freshman post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) drilled a 3-pointer to bring the Bishops within 29-27 with 1:05 left in the first half.

DePree answered with a basket and Silas hit a 3-pointer with :03 to play to give Albion a 34-27 halftime lead.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 47-44 on a 3-pointer by senior wing Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks) with 13:26 left in regulation time, but Crawford hit consecutive lay-ins to kick off the 10-2 run, with Will Braaksma adding a 3-point play and Mike Bailey hitting a 3-pointer to increase the Briton lead to 57-46 with 11:14 to go.

Reed hit another 3-pointer to bring the Bishops within 66-59 with 5:32 to play, but the Britons got 2 free throws and a lay-in from DePree and 2 baskets by Crawford to seal the win.

Sophomore post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) led the Bishops with 19 points, while junior point guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) added 12 points and shared the team lead with 3 assists. Warnock grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds and Reed also shared the team lead with 3 assists.

DePree led Albion with 16 points, Mike Thomas added 13 points and Crawford had 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Chojnacki and sophomore wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) represented the Bishops on the all-tournament team.
