Mount Union 75, Ohio Wesleyan 67

Brett Hershberger hit a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws during a 8-0 burst in the closing minutes that helped Mount Union top Ohio Wesleyan on the second day of the NCAC/OAC Challenge on Sunday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Sophomore post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) had converted a 3-point play to tie the game at 63-63 with 1:59 left in regulation time.

On Mount Union's ensuing possession, Hershberger hit a 3-pointer and was fouled by junior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) on the play. Hershberger missed the free throw, but Chris Blakely snared the rebound for the Purple Raiders, and Kyle Karpinski hit a jumper to give Mount Union a 68-63 lead with 1:18 to play.

The Bishops turned the ball over on their next possession and Mount Union added a free throw by Tony Basalla to stretch the lead to 69-63 with :53 left, and Hershberger added 2 more free throws with :26 to go that gave the Purple Raiders a 71-63 edge.

Ohio Wesleyan raced to a 7-0 lead as junior guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) buried a 3-pointer and Chojnacki added a pair of buckets, but the Purple Raiders rallied to tie the game at 12-12, with Brad Gerard and Hershberger hitting 3-pointers to lead the way.

The Bishops built another 7-point first-half lead, with freshman post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) contributing a bucket and 2 free throws and senior guard Bryan King (Sidney) hitting a 3-pointer, but Mount Union again rallied, tying the game at 31-31 and then getting a jumper from Tony Basalla to take a 33-31 halftime lead.

Freshman post Elliot Kaple (New Washington/Buckeye Central) hit a pair of baskets to help Ohio Wesleyan take a 6-point second half lead at 51-45 with 10:44 to go, but the Purple Raiders came back to take a 54-53 lead as Gerard hit a 3-pointer, Blakely added a pair of free throws and Kyle Karpinski added a basket.

Chojnacki led Ohio Wesleyan with 18 points and shared the team lead with 6 rebounds. King and Rudegeair added 10 points apiece and shared in the team lead with 6 rebounds each. Rybarczyk and sophomore wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Watterson) shared the team lead with 3 assists apiece.

Karpinski led the Purple Raiders with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Hershberger added 19 points and Gerard had 12 points. Clay Sanders led Mount Union with 5 assists.
