Dec. 8, 2004

Sophomore post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) erupted for a career-high 39 points to lead Ohio Wesleyan over Ohio Dominican in non-conference action on Wednesday in Columbus.

Ohio Dominican had taken an early 7-2 lead, but the Bishops rallied to tie the game at 11-11 on the strength of a pair of free throws, a 3-pointer and a lay-in by Chojnacki.

The Panthers responded with a pair of buckets by Jason Smith and one by Mike Fiebig to take a 17-13 lead with 12:43 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan then went on an 11-0 spree, with junior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) burying a pair of 3-pointers to highlight the Bishop run. Senior guard Bryan King (Sidney) also had a 3-pointer and freshman post Elliot Kaple (New Washington/Buckeye Central) contributed a basket. Warnock's second 3-pointer gave the Bishops a 24-17 lead with 9:15 left in the first half.

Smith led a Panther comeback that sliced the deficit to 2 points, only to see Ohio Wesleyan score the next 7 points to take a 37-28 lead on Warnock's lay-in with 2:35 left in the half.

Ohio Dominican closed to within 2 points at halftime, getting baskets from Aaron Gossett and Smith and a 3-pointer from Donta Patterson, and the Panthers took the lead early in the second half.

The Bishops took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by senior wing Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks) that made it 64-63 with 7:45 left in regulation time, and Chojnacki and junior point guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) added baskets to increase the Ohio Wesleyan edge to 68-63.

The Bishops stretched the lead to 77-69 on a 3-pointer by sophomore wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) with 1:13 remaining, and Chojnacki and Rybarczyk combined to go 8-for-8 from the free throw line during the final minute to seal the win.

Chojnacki went 14-for-24 from the field, including 3-for-7 from 3-point range, and 8-for-8 from the line to finish with 39 points. His previous career high was 28 points, most recently on Saturday against Wooster. Chojnacki also led the Bishops with 8 rebounds.
