Wesleyan 73, Hiram 55
Dec.
11, 2004
Freshman wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North), freshman
post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) and sophomore wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop
Watterson) buried consecutive 3-pointers to kick off a 16-1 run that broke
open a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Hiram on Saturday at Rickey
Arena.
Hiram jumped to an early 6-2 lead on the inside play of T.C. Spencer,
who sank a pair of lay-ins and a pair of free throws. The Bishops closed
to within 6-4 on a pair of Uritus free throws with 17:17 to play, and
then both teams went ice-cold from the field. During the next 7 minutes
of action, there was only one basket, that a 3-pointer by senior wing
Bryan King (Sidney) that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 7-6 lead.
Spencer ended the drought with a 3-point play that gave the Terriers a
9-7 lead with 10:16 left in the first half.
On Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, Cafarella buried a 3-pointer that
gave the Bishops the lead for good. Just 30 seconds later, Rudegeair knocked
down a 3-pointer, and less than a minute later, Uritus followed suit to
give the Bishops a 16-7 lead with 8:52 left in the first half.
After Rick Baldwin sank a free throw for Hiram, Uritus converted a 3-point
play and sophomore post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) followed with a pair of
hoops to cap the Bishop run, which left Ohio Wesleyan with a 23-10 lead
with 6:49 left in the first half.
The Terriers closed to within 25-17 on a pair of Spencer lay-ins and a
3-pointer by Baldwin, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with a 14-2 run that
saw King drill a pair of 3-pointers and Rudegeair contribute a 3-pointer
and a lay-in. King's second 3-pointer hiked the Bishop lead to 39-19 with
1:58 left in the first half, and Hiram would come no closer than 15 points
during the remainder of the contest.
Uritus led the Bishops with a career-high 26 points, going 9-for-14 from
the field and 6-for-6 from the line. Rudegeair finished with 13 points,
King added 12 and Chojnacki scored 11. King and Chojnacki shared the team
lead with 5 rebounds apiece, and junior point guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria
Catholic) led the Bishops with 5 assists.
Spencer led the Terriers with 23 points, going 7-for-9 from the field
and 9-for-10 from the line. Baldwin added 12 points for Hiram. Carlton
Dean led the Terriers with 9 rebounds and Chuck Williams had a team-high
3 assists.
