Ohio Wesleyan 72, Chicago 66

Dec. 17, 2004

[ Ben Chojnacki ]Sophomore post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) scored 15 points and junior wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) had 12 points in the second half to lead Ohio Wesleyan to a come-from-behind win over Chicago in non-conference action on Friday at Rickey Arena.

The Maroons tore up the nets during the first half, shooting 64 percent (16-for-25) on the way to building a 40-29 lead with :25 to play in the period. Brandon Woodhead led the balanced Chicago offense with 7 points and Justin Waldie, Nate Hainje and Brian Cuttica each scored 6 points for the Maroons.

Ohio Wesleyan, however, seized the momentum going into the intermission when Warnock drilled a 3-pointer and was fouled with :08 to play. Warnock missed the free throw, but freshman post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) snagged the rebound and scored on a putback to slice the deficit to 40-34 at halftime.

Chicago repelled one Bishop comeback early in the second half, seeing Ohio Wesleyan rally to within 42-41, and got a lay-in from Hainje and a 3-pointer by Jesse Meyer to take a 47-41 lead with 14:44 left in the game.

The Bishops tied the game on 3-pointers by Warnock and Chojnacki, then took their first lead since the opening seconds on Chojnacki's 3-point play with 12:05 left.

Ohio Wesleyan took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by sophomore wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) that made the score 56-55 with 7:04 remaining, then senior wing Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks) followed with a jumper, and after a Maroon free throw, Chojnacki scored another hoop to make it a 4-point game at 60-56 with 5:01 to play.

Cuttica sank a 3-pointer to bring the Maroons back to within a point, but Chojnacki answered with a 3-pointer to restore Ohio Wesleyan's 4-point lead at 63-59.

Chojnacki scored what proved to be a key hoop in the final minute. After missing a shot inside the paint, Chojnacki chased down his own rebound and stuck a 15-foot jumper from the right baseline to give the Bishops a 65-60 lead with :55 to play.

The Maroons got a lay-up from Clay Carmody on the other end, but with Chicago forced to foul, Warnock went 6-for-6 from the line during the final minute to help seal the win.

Chojnacki led the Bishops with 26 points and 7 rebounds. Warnock finished with 18 points, going 4-for-5 from 3-point range and 6-for-7 from the line. Uritus added 11 points and junior point guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) led the Bishops with 5 assists.

Waldie, Hainje and Carmody shared the Chicago team lead with 10 points apiece. Hainje and Jon Tood shared the Maroon lead with 6 rebounds apiece and Cuttica dished out a team-high 5 assists.
