Southwestern 75, Ohio Wesleyan 61

Sophomore post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) and senior guard Bryan King (Sidney) buried 3-pointers to stake Ohio Wesleyan to an early lead, but Southwestern pulled away during the second half to take a win in the first round of the Southwestern Classic on Wednesday in Georgetown, Texas.

Ohio Wesleyan will take on Trinity in Thursday's second round. Trinity defeated Illinois Wesleyan, 67-63, in overtime on Wednesday.

The buckets by Chojnacki and King gave Ohio Wesleyan a 6-0 lead, and after the Pirates got on the scoreboard on Jamonn Little's lay-in, senior wing Tyler Reed (Marysville/Fairbanks) sank 3 free throws to make it a 9-2 game.

The Pirates came back, getting a basket from Dan Slezak and a basket and a 3-point play by Little to tie the game at 9-9. Southwestern went on to take a 38-30 halftime lead.

Ohio Wesleyan came back to within 40-35 early in the second half, chipping away at the Pirate lead with a King 3-pointer and a pair of free throws by sophomore wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson), and the Bishops trailed, 43-37, after freshman post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) hit a pair of free throws with 16:23 left in the second half.

Southwestern answered with a 9-0 run that was capped by Mike Powell's 3-pointer, giving the Pirates a 52-37 lead with 14:00 to play, and the Southwestern lead would remain in double figures for the rest of the game.

Chojnacki led the Bishops with 20 points, while Rudegeair finished with 11 points and a team-high 5 rebounds. Uritus led the Bishops with 4 assists.

Little led the Pirates with 22 points and Aaron Bowser added 17 points.
