Trinity
61, Ohio Wesleyan 57
Dec.
30, 2004
Sophomore wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) sank
a pair of 3-pointers to help Ohio Wesleyan erase an 8-point deficit in
the final 5 minutes of regulation time, but Trinity's Peter Murray and
Sean Devins sank free throws to give the Tigers the lead and Trinity held
on for a win in the second round of the Southwestern Classic on Thursday
in Georgetown, Texas.
After sophomore post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) sank a jumper to bring the
Bishops within 48-47 with 7:57 left in regulation time, the Tigers threatened
to take off with the game. Mitch Walker's 3-pointer, a lay-in by Devins
and 4 straight Devins free throws fueled a 9-2 run that left Trinity holding
a 57-49 lead with 4:40 left in regulation time.
Uritus drilled a 3-pointer to bring the Bishops within 57-52, then junior
wing Andy Warnock (Delaware/Hayes) hit a pair of free throws to make it
a 57-54 game with 3:00 to play. Uritus followed with another 3-pointer
to tie the game at 57-57 with 2:27 left in regulation time.
Murray hit the first of 2 free throws with 1:10 remaining to put the Tigers
on top, 58-57, and the Bishops got the rebound of the second shot only
to see Trinity's Jason Morris steal the ball back. Morris, however, missed
a shot and Tiger teammate Andy Bates missed a follow attempt, with Uritus
clearing the rebound to give the Bishops the ball with :22 to play.
Ohio Wesleyan went to Chojnacki for the go-ahead shot, but the Tigers
forced a turnover with :12 to play. The Bishops fouled Devins with :08
remaining, and he hit the first shot to make it 59-57, but missed the
second shot. Bates grabbed the rebound but traveled, giving Ohio Wesleyan
one more chance.
The Bishops again looked for Chojnacki, but Murray was there for the steal
and iced the game with a dunk just before the final buzzer.
Trinity had raced to a 6-0 lead, only to see the Bishops come back and
take a 15-14 lead on a 3-point play by junior guard Ross Rybarczyk (Oberlin/Elyria
Catholic) with 9:36 left in the first half. The Tigers bounced back to
take a 27-20 lead late in the first half, only to see Ohio Wesleyan come
back to within a point after buckets by freshman post Dustin Rudegeair
(Yellow Springs), Warnock and Chojnacki.
Ohio Wesleyan rallied to take a 41-37 lead midway through the second half
on consecutive 3-pointers by senior guard Bryan King (Sidney), before
Trinity went on an 11-4 run to set up the final 8 minutes of action.
Chojnacki led the Bishops with 21 points and 6 rebounds, while Rudegeair
finished with 10 points. Uritus and Rybarczyk shared the team lead with
3 assists apiece.
Murray led the Tigers with 16 points and 7 rebounds and Devins added 11
points.
