Ohio Wesleyan 20, Oberlin 6

Senior attacker John Schlegel (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) had a hand in Ohio Wesleyan's first 4 goals as the Bishops jumped to a 4-0 lead and went on to defeat Oberlin in their North Coast Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday at Selby Field.

Schlegel scored the first 3 Bishop goals, then fed sophomore midfielder Jon Lewis (Columbus/Upper Arlington) for a man-up goal that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 4-0 lead midway through the first period.

Schlegel added another score in the final minutes of the quarter and Ohio Wesleyan led, 7-0, after the first period.

Oberlin rallied in the second quarter, getting goals from Vance Murphy, Ian Dias, Will Jaffee and Bryan Harfenist. Harfenist's goal, with 1:09 left in the first half, brought the Yeomen within 9-4 at halftime.

Ohio Wesleyan answered with 8 straight goals in the third period, with junior attacker Jarred Law (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) scoring 3 times and assisting 2 more.

Meanwhile, the Bishop defense blanked Oberlin during the period, holding the Yeomen to just one shot.

Schlegel and Law each totaled 5 goals and 3 assists for Ohio Wesleyan. Freshman attacker Harrison Iuliano (Mendham, N.J./Blair Academy) contributed 2 goals and an assist, while senior midfielder Brian Small (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall), freshman midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and freshman attacker Trevor Jones (Flanders, N.J./West Morris Mendham) had 2 goals apiece.

Senior Paul McCommons (Smyrna, Del./Dover), freshman Owen McDonagh (Newton, Mass./Avon Old Farms (Conn.)) and freshman Ryan Perone (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) each had one save in the Ohio Wesleyan goal.

Jaffee led Oberlin with 2 goals and an assist.

Jared Pickard stopped 10 shots in the Oberlin goal, while Drew Zambelli had one save.
