Ohio Wesleyan 14, Denison 13

[ Brian McCommons ]Sophomore attacker Brian McCommons (Smyrna, Del./Dover) scored with 1:11 left in regulation time to cap a frantic rally that lifted Ohio Wesleyan over Denison in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Selby Field.

With the Bishops trailing, 13-10, with less than 5 minutes to play, junior midfielder Chris Riehl (Upper Arlington) scored and freshman attacker Harrison Iuliano (Mendham, N.J./Blair Academy) added a man-up goal just over a minute later to pull Ohio Wesleyan within 13-12.

Senior midfielder Brian Small (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) scored to tie the game at 13-13 with 2:30 remaining and McCommons notched the game-winner off a feed from senior midfielder Seth McNally (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland).

Ohio Wesleyan won the ensuing faceoff and was able to run out most of the rest of the remaining time before turning the ball over with :09 to play, but Denison was not able to get off a shot at the tying goal.

[ John Schlegel ]Ohio Wesleyan raced to a 3-0 lead less than 5 minutes into the game, with senior attacker John Schlegel (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) scoring twice during that span. McNally added a goal with 6:27 left in the first quarter for a 4-0 Bishop lead.

Denison rallied with 3 straight goals, 2 coming from the stick of Chris Boehl, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with 3 straight goals, with Schlegel scoring one and assisting another.

The Big Red came back with 2 scores, but the Bishops got a man-up goal from freshman attacker Nick Gallagher (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) to take an 8-5 lead into the locker room.

Denison struck quickly in the third quarter, scoring a pair of man-up goals in the first 2 minutes of play.

Ohio Wesleyan got those scores back with a pair of goals less than a minute apart, but Denison came back with 2 more man-up goals and finished the quarter with a 3-0 run. The Big Red scored 6 straight goals during the third and fourth quarters, with 6 different players scoring, to take a 13-10 lead with 7:44 left in regulation time.

Schlegel led the Bishops with 3 goals and 2 assists, while Iuliano finished with 2 goals and junior attacker Jarred Law (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) added a goal and 2 assists.

Senior Paul McCommons (Smyrna, Del./Dover) stopped 10 shots in the Ohio Wesleyan goal, and sophomore defenseman Peter Hargrove (Medina) was credited with a save in the fourth quarter.

Boehl led Denison with 4 goals, Tom Moschos had 2 goals and an assist and Craig Pastor and Clay Wawner scored 2 goals apiece.

Porter Hayes had 10 saves for Denison.
