Ohio Wesleyan 21, Whittier 7

Senior attacker John Schlegel (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) scored 4 goals in the first quarter as Ohio Wesleyan raced to a 5-1 lead and never looked back in a non-conference win over Whittier on Wednesday at Selby Field.

Schlegel scored a pair of goals less than a minute apart to put Ohio Wesleyan on the scoreboard, and freshman midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) followed with a goal that gave the Bishops a 3-0 lead just over 5 minutes into the game.

The Poets answered with a score by A.J. Marciano, but Schlegel scored off a feed from freshman attacker Harrison Iuliano (Mendham, N.J./Blair Academy) less than a minute later, then tacked on another goal in the final minutes of the period.

Schlegel assisted a man-up goal in the opening seconds of the second period and sophomore attacker Brian McCommons (Smyrna, Del./Dover) and Iuliano added goals to stretch the Bishop lead to 8-1 midway through the quarter.

The Bishops took an 11-2 halftime lead before McCommons scored in the first minute of the second half and junior attacker Jarred Law (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) and sophomore midfielder Jon Lewis (Columbus/Upper Arlington) followed with man-up goals to stretch the lead to 14-2.

Schlegel led the Bishops with 6 goals and 3 assists. McCommons finished with 3 goals and an assist and Lewis scored 3 goals. Iuliano added 2 goals and 3 assists and Gallagher had a goal and 4 assists. Junior midfielder Chris Riehl (Upper Arlington) added 2 goals.

Senior Paul McCommons (Smyrna, Del./Dover) had 14 saves in the first 56 minutes and freshman Ryan Perone (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) had 1 save in the last 4 minutes in the Ohio Wesleyan goal.

Marciano and Dave Gerbarg scored 2 goals apiece for Whittier.

Brad Sollenberger went the distance in the Poet goal, recording 6 saves.
