Denison 10, Ohio Wesleyan 9

April 9, 2005

Chris Boehl scored with :08 remaining in regulation time to give Denison a non-conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday in Granville.

Denison got the ball on a turnover with 1:26 left in regulation time, and had one shot go wide of the Bishop goal. Senior Paul McCommons (Smyrna, Del./Dover) saved the next shot, and sophomore defenseman Brad Miller (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) got possession of the ball but could not clear it, and the ball went back to Denison with about 40 seconds to play. Boehl moved to the goal from the right side, eluded a Bishop defender and scored unassisted.

Ohio Wesleyan won the ensuing faceoff, but the Bishops could not get off a shot before the final horn.

The Bishops had taken an early 2-0 lead on goals by senior attacker John Schlegel (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) and freshman midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner), but Denison evened the game with goals from Dean Scontras and Boehl less than 30 seconds apart.

Schlegel put the Bishops ahead, 3-2, with a goal late in the first quarter before Ohio Wesleyan got scores from freshman attacker Harrison Iuliano (Mendham, N.J./Blair Academy), freshman attacker Nick Gallagher (Columbus/Dublin Scioto), Schlegel and sophomore attacker Brian McCommons (Smyrna, Del./Dover) while holding the Big Red scoreless during the second quarter to take a 7-2 lead into the locker room.

Denison rallied early in the third quarter, notching scores by Clay Wawner, Craig Pastor and Wawner again during the first 3 minutes of the period to close to within 7-5. Less than 2 minutes later, Wawner picked up a loose ball, broke in alone on Bishop keeper McCommons and converted the chance to bring the Big Red within 7-6.

Schlegel scored just over a minute later to end the Big Red run, and the teams traded goals once more during the period, which ended with Ohio Wesleyan holding a 9-7 lead.

Denison closed to within 9-8 on Tom Moschos' unassisted goal with 6:55 left in regulation time and tied the game on Jordan Kilbury's goal with 3:53 to play.

Schlegel led the Bishops with 4 goals, while Brian McCommons had a goal and 3 assists.

Wawner led Denison with 3 goals, and Pastor and Boehl had 2 goals apiece.

Paul McCommons was credited with 11 saves in the Bishop goal.

Alex Baruch had 14 saves in the Denison cage.
