Ohio Wesleyan 14, Wittenberg 7

[ John Schlegel ]Senior attacker John Schlegel (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) scored 4 of his game-high 6 goals during the third quarter as Ohio Wesleyan broke open a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wittenberg on Wednesday night in Springfield.

The win gives the Bishops a share of the NCAC championship, Ohio Wesleyan's 15th in the 21 seasons of NCAC competition. Ohio Wesleyan can win the NCAC title outright by defeating Wooster next Tuesday.

Schlegel had scored with 12:08 left in the first quarter to break a 1-1 tie and put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay. Senior midfielder Jason Balmer (Park City, Utah/Forman (Conn.) School) added a goal later in the period for a 3-1 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

Wittenberg closed to within 3-2 late in the first quarter and to within 4-3 midway through the second quarter, but was not able to tie the game.

Sophomore attacker Brian McCommons (Smyrna, Del./Dover) scored an unassisted goal to give Ohio Wesleyan a 5-3 halftime lead.

Schlegel then scored less than 2 minutes into the third quarter, and freshman attacker Nick Gallagher (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) followed with a goal to make it 7-3 in favor of Ohio Wesleyan, but Jay Shimko scored to bring the Tigers within 7-4.

From there, Schlegel took over, ringing up an unassisted goal with 3:40 left in the third quarter and then scoring off a feed from junior attacker Jarred Law (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) with 3:05 left in the period. Schlegel then fed sophomore midfielder Jon Lewis (Columbus/Upper Arlington) for a score with :46 left in the quarter and finished off the flurry with an unassisted goal 14 seconds later.

Schlegel added a goal 44 seconds into the fourth quarter to increase the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 12-4.

Schlegel led all players with 6 goals and 2 assists. Freshman midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) added 2 goals and freshman midfielder Harrison Iuliano (Mendham, N.J./Blair Academy), McCommons and Law each contributed a goal and an assist.

Senior Paul McCommons (Smyrna, Del./Dover) had 19 saves in the Ohio Wesleyan goal.

Matt Davis led Wittenberg with 3 goals, Shimko added 2 goals and Adam Morrison had a goal and 3 assists. Andy Shively had 11 saves for the Tigers.

The game was delayed for nearly an hour because of lightning in the Springfield metropolitan area.
