Ohio
Wesleyan 3, Pitt-Greensburg 1
Kalamazoo 1, Kean 0
Sept. 3, 2004
Sophomore
midfielder Nick Markovich (Upper Arlington) scored the game-winning goal
and junior forward Jeff Fisher (Westerville/North) added an insurance
score as the Ohio Wesleyan men's soccer team opened its 2004 season with
a win over Pitt-Greensburg in first-round action of the annual Fred Myers
Invitational on Friday at Roy Rike Field.
Ohio
Wesleyan advances to the tournament championship game to face Kalamazoo
(Mich.) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The consolation game will pit Kean against
Pitt-Greensburg at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The Bishops had a couple good chances to score in the early going. Fisher
wheeled and fired a shot from the right side of the box in the 11th minute,
but Bobcat keeper John Harshman was there at the right post for the save.
Ohio Wesleyan had another chance just over a minute later when freshman
forward Damon Wilson (Mullica Hill, N.J./St. Andrews (Del.)) was taken
down in the box. Junior midfielder Ryan Martin (Dublin/Wellington) lined
up for a penalty kick, but his blast went over the crossbar.
Pitt-Greensburg drew first blood in the 18th minute when Justin Innocent
took a restart from about 25 yards out. Bishop keeper Tom Yaggi (Toledo/St.
Francis de Sales) went up to bat the ball over the goal, but the ball
hit the crossbar and bounced straight down and into the net for a 1-0
Bobcat lead.
Ohio Wesleyan evened the game late in the first half on a Pitt-Greensburg
own goal. Sophomore midfielder Brandon Bianco (Powell/Olentangy) beat
a Bobcat defender along the left end line and centered the ball, but Bobcat
defender Kris Richardson inadvertantly struck the ball into his own net
with 8:19 left in the first half.
The Bishops turned up the offensive pressure in the second half and struck
quickly for the go-ahead goal.
Sophomore forward Kevin Lehman (Easton, Conn./Barlow) centered the ball
from the left end line to Markovich, whose header found the back of the
net to put the Bishops ahead to stay.
Fisher followed with an unassisted goal in the 58th minute. He eluded
a Bobcat defender near the top of the box and cracked a low shot into
the back of the net.
Ohio
Wesleyan outshot Pitt-Greensburg, 17-3. Freshman Chris Brown (Fitzwilliam,
N.H./St. Bernards) had 1 save in the second half in the Bishop goal. Harshman
finished with 5 saves for Pitt-Greensburg.
In Friday's opener, Kalamazoo's Steve Dendler scored exactly 7:00 into
the second half to lift the Hornets over Kean.
