Senior
post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) scored 5 points and sophomore guard
Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) converted a 4-point play to highlight
a 12-0 run that erased an early Earlham lead, and junior guard Amanda
Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) and senior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview)
sparked a 17-0 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay in a North Coast
Athletic Conference win over the Quakers on Wednesday in Richmond, Ind.
The Quakers had used a balanced offense, getting 2 points from 5 different
players, to take an early 10-2 lead. Earlham stretched its lead to 16-7
on a 4-point play by Lauren Herrmann with 11:21 left in the first half
and still held a 23-16 lead after Guin Summerton hit a 3-pointer with
4:05 to play in the period.
Brizendine started the Bishop run with a basket, then Lloyd hit a 3-pointer
and converted the free throw to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 23-22 with
3:17 left. Brizendine tied the game with a free throw with 2:56 to go,
then put the Bishops ahead with a basket on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession.
Senior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) added a 3-pointer to give
Ohio Wesleyan a 28-23 lead with 1:54 left in the half.
Earlham rallied to take a 35-34 lead on Lisa Vanderkolk's basket with
15:43 left in the game, but the Bishops answered with 17 straight points
to break the game open. Brizendine scored to return the lead to Ohio Wesleyan,
then Nanney drilled a 3-pointer and sophomore guard Rachel Messaros (Granville/Columbus
Bishop Hartley) added a free throw to make it a 40-35 game.
Lloyd, Nanney and Heil followed with layups before another Messaros free
throw, then sophomore post Tifini Ray (Hillard/Davidson) added a lay-in
and Heil capped the run with a pair of free throws with 10:40 to go.
Brizendine led the Bishops with 19 points and shared the team lead with
9 rebounds. Heil added 12 points and shared the team lead with 9 rebounds
and Lloyd finished with 10 points and led the Bishops with 3 assists.
Chelsea Caywood led Earlham with 16 points. Vanderkolk led the Quakers
with 6 rebounds and Samantha Lurie had a team-high 2 assists.
