Senior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) scored 6 points during a game-opening 10-0 run that started the Bishops on their way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Hiram on Wednesday at Hiram.

Sophomore post Tifini Ray (Hillard/Davidson) opened the scoring with a lay-in on the Bishops' first possession, and Heil and senior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) followed with layups before Heil added 2 more lay-ins, the latter giving Ohio Wesleyan a 10-0 lead with 15:45 left in the first half.

Hiram closed to within 10-6, rallying on baskets by Amanda Hummel, Casse Bedard and Jessica Harris, and the Terriers still trailed by just 25-19 on Abbey Gorby's 3-point play with 5:11 left in the first half.

Heil responded with a 3-point play of her own on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, and when junior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) knocked down a 3-pointer and sophomore guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) hit a free throw, the Bishops had increased their lead to 32-19 with 1:30 left in the first half, and took a 34-21 lead into the locker room.

Hummel drilled a 3-pointer and Bedard converted a 3-point play to bring the Terriers within 34-27 early in the second half, but the Bishops then went on an 11-1 spree that included a pair of Heil lay-ins and a Lloyd 3-pointer, and the lead would remain in double digits the rest of the way.

Heil finished with team highs of 22 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. The 22 points raised her career total to 1988, moving her into second place on the all-time NCAC scoring list ahead of Shannon Ferguson, who scored 1969 points for Earlham from 1990-94.

Brizendine finished with 17 points and Lloyd added 10 points for the Bishops.

Hummel led Hiram with 11 points. Tania Carman led the Terriers with 10 rebounds and Bedard and Gorby each had 2 assists.
