Allegheny
69, Ohio Wesleyan 58
Jan.
29, 2005
Meredith McDonough and Raelynn Miles each scored 4 points during an 11-0
run that gave Allegheny the lead for good, and the Gators held off a handful
of Ohio Wesleyan rallies in defeating the Bishops in North Coast Athletic
Conference action on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Allegheny had raced to a 6-0 lead on buckets by McDonough, Courtney Steding
and Miles, and after Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 17-15, Allegheny answered
with a 3-pointer by Katie Kestler and a lay-in by Jackie Tubo to take
their biggest lead of the half.
Ohio Wesleyan answered with a 3-pointer by senior guard Celina Dopoulos
(Strongsville) and a lay-in by sophomore post Tifini Ray (Hillard/Davidson)
to cut the deficit back to 2 points, and the Bishops eventually took the
lead at 26-25 on a bucket by senior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City)
with 3:28 to go, and play during the remainder of the half was fairly
even, befitting the 30-30 deadlock that the teams took into the locker
room.
Steding drew first blood in the second half, hitting a free throw to give
Allegheny a 31-30 lead, but senior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview)
answered with a bucket to give the Bishops a 32-31 advantage with 19:27
left.
Miles sank a jumper off a Gator offensive rebound on Allegheny's next
possession, and McDonough scored on a fast break after a Bishop miss,
then followed with another basket as Allegheny took a 37-32 lead. Miles
followed with a pair of free throws, and then Bishop nemesis Valery Medwid
buried a 3-pointer to cap the 11-0 run and give Allegheny a 42-32 lead
with 15:59 to play.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 2 points when Heil's 3-pointer sliced the
deficit to 45-43 with 12:35 to go, but Kestler responded with a 3-pointer
and a jumper to give the Gators a 7-point lead.
Heil drilled another 3-pointer to bring the Bishops within 54-50 with
6:46 to play, but this time it was McDonough with a jumper and Miles with
2 free throws that returned the momentum to Allegheny.
The Bishops had one more comeback in them, with Heil hitting another 3-pointer
to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 60-56 with 3:34 left, but the Gators slammed
the door by scoring the next 9 points, with Miles contributing a basket
and 3 free throws and Steding adding 3 free throws.
Heil finished with team highs of 26 points -- with 21 of those coming
in the second half -- and 9 rebounds. The 26 points raised her career
total to 2014, making her the first Ohio Wesleyan woman and only the second
in NCAC history to reach that figure.
Brizendine finished with 13 points and Dopoulos added 10 points and a
team-high 3 assists for the Bishops.
Miles led Allegheny with 18 points, while McDonough had 14 points and
Kestler scored 12 points. Meghan Vasilisin led the Gators with 12 rebounds
and Steding had a team-high 5 assists.
