Ohio Wesleyan 76, Wooster 64

Senior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) sparked a 9-0 second-half run that helped Ohio Wesleyan break open a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wooster on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The first half was a typical, rugged Ohio Wesleyan-Wooster affair, featuring 6 lead changes and 6 ties. Freshman guard Molly Baker (Avon Lake) came on in the closing seconds of the first half and drilled a 3-pointer that gave the Bishops a 35-30 lead, which was the biggest lead by either team during the period.

Wooster closed to within 41-39 on Maria Gonzalez' fast break lay-in with 14:09 to go, and the Fighting Scots were still within 43-40 when Alexis Louttit sank a free throw with 12:25 to play.

Brizendine then threaded a pass to junior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy), who connected on a 3-pointer. On Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, Brizendine found freshman guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington), who buried a 3-pointer to hike the Bishop lead to 49-40. Brizendine finished off the Bishop run with a 3-point play that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 52-40 advantage with 10:40 left in the game.

Wooster rallied to within 52-45 as Beth Besancon collected a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer, but the Bishops scored the next 6 points, getting a pair of free throws from freshman post Lauren Fazio (Westerville/South) and 2 more lay-ins by Brizendine to take a 58-45 lead, and the Fighting Scots would come no closer than 9 points during the remainder of the contest.

Brizendine led the Bishops with 28 points and 12 rebounds, while senior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) added 16 points. A bevy of Bishops shared the team lead with 3 assists apiece: Brizendine, senior guard Celina Dopoulos (Strongsville), Heil and sophomore guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson).

Besancon led Wooster with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Gonzalez added 15 points and Sara Perry led the Fighting Scots with 4 assists.
