Ohio
Wesleyan 71, Earlham 39
Feb.
12, 2005
Senior
wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) had 13 points as Ohio Wesleyan opened
the game with a 23-1 run and never looked back on the way to a North Coast
Athletic Conference win over Earlham on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Heil finished with a team-high 19 points, raising her career total to
2062 and making her the NCAC's all-time leading scorer. She surpassed
the mark of 2053 points compiled by Allegheny's Kim Huber from 1992-96.
Heil
opened the game's scoring with a lay-in and after a 5-second violation
by the Quakers, senior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City) added a lay-in
just 9 seconds later. Senior post Shelby Larson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling
Meadows) added a jumper before buckets by Heil and Brizendine gave the
Bishops a 10-0 lead with 16:29 left in the first half.
Earlham got on the scoreboard when Lisa Vanderkolk hit 1 of 2 free throws
at the 16:09 mark, but the Bishops reeled off the next 13 points, which
included a total of 3 3-point plays by Heil. The last of the 3-point plays
came with 9:03 on the clock and not only gave the Bishops a 23-1 lead
but moved Heil into the top spot on the conference's career scoring list.
The Quakers rallied by scoring the next 9 points, getting baskets by Guin
Summerton, Chelsea Caywood and Vanderkolk before Summerton converted a
3-point play to make it a 23-10 game with 6:43 left in the half, and Summerton's
subsequent 3-pointer brought the Quakers within 25-13 with 4:39 to go
in the first half.
Earlham was still within 37-24 on Summerton's bucket with 13:17 left in
regulation time, but a pair of 3-pointers by junior guard Amanda Nanney
(Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) and another by freshman guard Kathleen Cooper
(Columbus/Upper Arlington) hiked the Bishop lead to 20 points at 46-26,
effectively sealing the win for Ohio Wesleyan.
Heil led the Bishops with 19 points, while Brizendine finished with 10
points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon
Jackson) led the Bishops with 3 assists.
Summerton led Earlham with 16 points. Caywood had a team-high 7 rebounds
and Whitney McBurrows had 2 assists for the Quakers.
