Kenyon 48, Ohio Wesleyan 46

Feb. 16, 2005

Alisha Moreno scored 7 straight points to give Kenyon the lead and the Ladies held on to nip Ohio Wesleyan in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday in Gambier. The win clinched the North Coast Athletic Conference championship for Kenyon.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 27-24 halftime lead on the strength of 11 first-half points by senior post Erica Brizendine (Grove City). Brizendine had put the Bishops ahead, 19-18, with a jumper with 5:05 left in the half, and senior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) followed with a basket that gave the Bishops a 21-18 lead. Ohio Wesleyan later took a 5-point lead on a pair of free throws by senior guard Celina Dopoulos (Strongsville), but Kenyon closed to within 27-24 at halftime on Moreno's jumper just before the horn.

The Bishops scored the first 4 points of the second half, getting jumpers from Brizendine and senior post Shelby Larson (Arlington Hts., Ill./Rolling Meadows) to take a 31-24 lead with 17:43 left in the game.

Kenyon rallied to within 33-31 on Dana Halicki's 3-pointer, but the Bishops soon had the lead back up to 7 points, getting a 3-pointer by junior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) and a steal and jumper from Heil to take a 40-33 lead with 8:14 to play.

Ohio Wesleyan still led, 43-38, on Heil's jumper with 5:14 left in regulation time, but the Ladies came back with a pair of free throws by Allison Lebar with 4:22 to go before Moreno's 3-pointer tied the game at 43-43 with 3:47 remaining.

Moreno put Kenyon ahead to stay with a jumper with 2:14 left, then hit another jumper with 1:36 to play to give the Ladies a 47-43 lead.

Heil hit one of 2 free throws to bring the Bishops within 47-44 with 1:01 remaining, and after a Kenyon miss from the free throw line, Brizendine cleard the rebound and scored at the other end to make it a 47-46 game with :45 to play.

Dopoulos fouled Kenyon's Hilary Gowins with :17 on the clock and Gowins hit the first shot but missed the second.

Sophomore post Tifini Ray (Hilliard/Davidson) cleared the rebound of Gowins' miss, giving the Bishops the ball with a chance to tie the game, but Heil's jumper in the waning seconds was off the mark.

Brizendine led the Bishops with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Heil finished with 14 points. Dopoulos, Larson and sophomore guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) shared the team lead with 2 assists apiece.

Lebar led Kenyon with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Gowins added 11 points and led the Ladies with 4 assists.
