Rachel Clark-Haggy scored 5 points and Kathy Hittle had 4 points
during a key 11-1 first-half run and Brittany Landreth scored 4 straight
points to avert an Ohio Wesleyan comeback as Wittenberg topped the Bishops
in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Branch Rickey
Arena.
Ohio Wesleyan finishes in a fourth-place tie with Allegheny in the final
conference standings. Allegheny won a tiebreaker and will host the Bishops
in an NCAC tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday at Meadville, Pa. NCAC

Wittenberg took an early 10-3 lead behind a pair of 3-pointers by Ali
Rohlfs and a lay-in by Hittle.
The Bishops scored the next 6 points, with senior post Erica Brizendine
(Grove City) and senior wing Kelly Heil (Sylvania/Southview) each sinking
a pair of free throws before Heil's jumper brought Ohio Wesleyan within
10-9 with 13:43 left in the first half.
The Tigers followed with their 11-1 spurt, with Hittle starting it off
with back-to-back lay-ins, and after a Rohlfs lay-in, Clark-Haggy chipped
in with a lay-in and a 3-point play to give Wittenberg a 21-10 lead with
9:21 to play.
Wittenberg ended the first half with an exclamation point when Megan Miller
stole the ball in the closing seconds of the first half, streaked downcourt
and threw in a 3-pointer just before the buzzer, giving the Tigers a 35-20
lead at the intermission.
The Tigers still led, 42-27, with 14:41 left in the game when Ohio Wesleyan
started to click offensively.
Freshman post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) converted a 3-point
play, and after Rohlfs scored for Wittenberg, sophomore guard Rachel Messaros
(Granville/Columbus Bishop Hartley) answered with another 3-point play.
Lester followed with 2 more free throws and a lay-in that brought Ohio
Wesleyan within 44-37 with 11:33 left in the game.
The Bishops were still within 50-43 on Messaros' lay-in with 8:07 to go
when Landreth scored on a putback and followed with a pair of free throws,
increasing the Wittenberg lead to 54-43 with 6:30 remaining, and the Tigers
would remain in front by a double-digit margin for the remainder of the
contest.
Messaros led the Bishops with 13 points, while Heil finished with 11 points
and shared the team lead with 4 rebounds. Brizendine also shared the team
lead with 4 rebounds, and senior guard Celina Dopoulos (Strongsville)
had a team-high 3 assists.
Megan Miller led Wittenberg with 21 points and Rohlfs finished with 14
points. Hittle grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and Landreth led the Tigers
with 4 assists.
